Chinese leader Xi Jinping vows 'reunification' with Taiwan - BBC News

China's President Xi Jinping has said that "reunification" with Taiwan "must be fulfilled", as heightened tensions over the island continue.

Mr Xi said unification should be achieved peacefully, but warned that the Chinese people had a "glorious tradition" of opposing separatism.

In response, Taiwan said its future lay in the hands of its people. Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state, while China views it as a breakaway province.

One thing the international community must take lessons from with when Nazi Germany was eying up territory is not to appease China. I'm afraid China won't stop there, it'll want more if they are allowed to just walk into Taiwan.

Millitarily speaking, Taiwan is insignificant compared to China. But one of the reasons why it is such a concern to the CCP to reunify the island is the threat Taiwan poses to its totalitarian ways. Even living in constant fear of being invaded by a superpower, Taiwan diverged from authoritarism into a healthy democracy, even more than many western nations. The CCPs worst nightmare would be that the chinese people would look at Taiwan's democracy, realize the distopic government they have been forced to submit to and start to demand such basic rights in the mainland. This is why it is important to stand with Taiwan. The CCPs attemp to crush Taiwan is authoritarianism's attempt to crush democracy.

I would encourage anyone who hasn't visited Taiwan to do so. It really is a beautiful friendly place.

I'm worried more and more people will be unaware of this and will just think of Taiwan as only being a cause of international tension.

It is an actual place with a unique character full of real people.
