'Great Wall of Steel': China's Xi Jinping promises modern military I DW News

China's National People's Congress has wrapped up its annual meeting, after handing President Xi Jinping a precedent-breaking third term.

Many of Xi's allies have also been handed top government roles. The parliament has approved the biggest government reorganization in years, revamping some ministries and forming a new financial regulator. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Xi said that China must become more self-reliant. Xi also vowed to modernize China's military, amid mounting tensions with the United States over Taiwan.

After unanimously getting himself elected for an unprecedented third term on Friday, Xi Jinping has now installed another close confident in a key post: Li Qiang was elected by the National People's Congress on Saturday as China's new premier.

Li, best known as the enforcer of last year's coronavirus lockdown in Shanghai, is believed to have earned Xi's trust by sticking to the strict zero-COVID strategy despite months long protests in China's biggest city.

This was the latest personnel reshuffle endorsed by the National People's Congress, China's ceremonial parliament, this week. Zhao Leji, Wang Huning and Han Zheng, who were all members of the Politburo Standing Committee, were elected on Friday as the new parliament chair, chairman of the top political advisory body and vice president, respectively.

In 1984, Britain asked China to fulfill the "Treaty of Nanjing, 1842, cession of Hong Kong" and refused to handover Hong Kong, this is why China has to modernize its military.
Taiwan is part of China supported by the majority of the Chinese 1.4B population. Definitely not DW, US and Germany has the final say.
