I know if can be scary to go to your first therapy session and you may even question scheduling because you might be scared and unsure of what to expect. but fear no more because Today I will be answering your question "what will my first therapy session be like?"

Let's start form the beginning

1. When you get to the office, there may be someone to greet you but keep most of the time there isn't, so just take a seat and wait for the therapist to come out. The therapist will probably have paperwork for you to fill out so arrive early, unless they sent you the paperwork and you have it all competed before session.

2. the therapist will come out to greet you and walk you back to the office

3. They will introduce themselves and ask you what brought you in

4. At that point you will get to discuss your situation and explain how you are feeling or what was it that got you to reach out to a therapist- Some therapist may take notes in session to help them remember things and help develop a treatment plan with you. Other therapist will not write anything down while you are there. Don't let this worry you, many therapist are wiring things down for their own memory and you are always welcome to ask to see what they are writing down!

5. Some people have asked me if they have to lay down or sit and the answer is that most of the time, you will sit although you may lay down if you are practicing meditation if you please. A therapist will never make you lay down most of the time it's just sitting in a chair and chatting. I will say though that sometimes, I will work with someone who is having a tough time talking and being seated and in those situations, I have some fidgety toys, or balls that we throw back and fourth while talking. I Stna dup with my clients and throw the ball and I know some therapist for "Walk and talk" therapy. So if you feel you need to stand, tell the therapist and see how you can fell more conformable.

6. Is what I say confidential? yes! everything you say is confidential, there are some exceptions to that rule thought. A therapist will only break confidentiality if you are threatening to harm yourself or another person, or if they feel your life or safety is threatened. The therapist will be very clear about the rules of confidentiality and they will have you read and sign paperwork prior to session explaining this. so make sure you read over it carefully.

7. des the therapist have the questions prepared? how do they know what to ask me? Sometimes, the therapist will have some questions prepared but most of the time the therapist listens to what you are saying and decides what to ask depending on what you are saying. They ask questions to get more clarification and make sure they understand the situation correctly. so If you feel you therapist got something wrong, correct them or clarify for them that way they know how to better help you.

8. At the end of the session the therapist will probably summarize the session, give you an action plan or homework, and talk about scheduling future sessions. At this time, you could probably schedule in session or you can let them know that you will call them to schedule your next one. Either way is good.

Although not all therapists are the same, the process is usually very similar but if you still feel concerned and unsure of what to expect make sure you ask your therapist prior to your session and usually they are really good about examining the process to you!

I hope you found this helpful!

Had my first session today. And it was very weird to talk about myself for so long haha but she was nice. Less scary than I thought it would be 💛

My first therapy session was really just an introduction of myself and the therapist herself. I went into detail of what brought me there and what's been happening the last few months.

I’m really, really nervous about my first session. I have quite bad social anxiety and I’m also autistic and feel the need to plan conversations out beforehand so I know how it’s gonna go but im scared because I don’t know what they are gonna ask or how I should respond and aghhh it’s really stressful. I’ve tried seeing a therapist in person before but I ended up getting CBT online instead. And that really messed with me because 1. It didn’t help 2. I felt like they didn’t want me there 3. My sister told them bad things about me for no reason what so ever. 4. I felt like nobody was ever going to actually try and help me.

Hey.. I have a quick question for you if you see this. I have a strange situation. I’m about to start therapy where my step dad works (I have no other option). If I share my past, I could get him in trouble and I really don’t want to make my life situation worse than it is and as much as I dislike him, I don’t want him to lose his job.. what should I do? I plan to tell the therapist about it right away that I’m related to a counselor… hopefully it can be kept confidential? Idk.. I’m really nervous about potentially getting him in trouble. Can the therapist legally keep my secrets for me if it doesn’t involve physical harm?
