May is Mental Health Awareness Month!! Today I'm sharing what to expect during your first therapy session, from my personal experience as a client. If you're considering finding a therapist, go for it! Being able to talk to a mental health professional has been the greatest support in my life. I know if you've never talked with a therapist before, it can feel awkward or even a little scary, but that's ok. Doing anything for the first time might be a little scary, but you deserve to give yourself your best chance.

Take care of yourself and get the support you need, you deserve it!!

RESOURCES:

NOTE: If you're feeling overwhelmed or if you're under a lot of stress, you can call the Suicide Hotline to talk with someone. Please reach out to them if you are feeling like hurting yourself or are suicidal -- but even if you're not and just need to talk to someone -- you can still call the number.

Thank you so much for being open and honest about your experience! I'd recommend this video to anyone who is nervous and uncertain about what to expect. It can be super intimidating. Some people think you just go in and get your emotions and trauma just tossed around like crazy. But a good therapist goes at your pace. I found a really great therapist after over five years of searching, and we haven't touched trauma. We're working on identifying emotions, learning to not judge them, and accepting situations and people in my life. Basically, learning to manage my day-to-day. Learning emotional regulation.

The main thing for me is the cost. I want to see a therapist, but I'm pretty sure they're not cheap. I went to biblical counselors and my pastor when I was a Christian, but recently I became an atheist. The biblical counselors were good to talk to, but they didn't really help long term. Basically, their advice often was "pray more, read the bible more, read this book that I'm giving you, and try harder to stop sinning. God will give you the strength of you ask for it." There was sometimes more to it, but that was most of their advice. Thankfully, it was free, so I didn't waste money on it.
I have a question. Can you get a refund if you didn't get help from the therapist? That's a concern for me. I don't want to pay for it and then the therapist sucks. Is there at least a way to lower the cost? I don't have health insurance btw.

Hey I wanted to say I'm suffering from MDD for a year and a half and now I'm trying Zoloft and I wanted to ask if it's for whole life or that sometime I'm just gonna quit the medicine and I'll feel good even without the medicine?
Thx
