UPDATE: people are actually now starting to breed hermit crabs in captivity thanks to Mary Akers who found a way to reproduce them in captivity, that being said though this is still a small group of people, but good thing is, there is a community of people that advocates for proper hermit crab care and they continually grow every year.

But in the mean time, never support businesses or activities that take/harm hermit crabs in the wild.

I am ten years old, and I got hermit crabs like a week ago. I got three medium sized hermit crabs. The cage the place gave us was extremely small. And ofc their shells were painted. I ended up buying them a 10 gallon cage with salt water and some shells. I also gave them a heater, the second I put a natural shell in their cage one of them changed shells within 5 minutes.

They purposly abuse the crabs so when they are adopted they are more thankful with the new owner, it's a money thing. So the crabs don't run away, people don't want to invest in a flight risk. Back in the 80s, a group called CRAB(Crustacean Rescue and Betterment) lobbied for better conditions at pet stores, some even went as far as living in small boxes as form of protest.

Back in 2006, my librarian in elementary had a hermit crab. At the time I had no clue what it was since I was young but it was always in the corner of the glass tank and never moved. The next school year, the tank was gone. I'm sure it was dead

I recently got some hermit crabs. My mother bought them as a souvenir and i instantly got hooked. I wasn’t there when she bought the crabs so the tank and supplies they had were HORRIBLE. Just today i got some stuff to make them happy and not abuse them. Sadly one of them passed due to the terrible conditions.

I’m at the age of 12 and have had many hermit crabs and have them live up to 5 years without them dying. I take very good care of them and buy much as I can to help them from being further abused

I recently got two hermit crabs in the outer banks and today I found out that one of them died. (I immediately moved my crabs to a better habitat than what was originally bought) I am very heart broken and wish that these crabs would have been cared for better when in the store.

I had one when i was a child in that kind of tank for years. I have 2 more last month and im getting a hermit crab tank thats 40 gallons and making it as close to the wild as we can

I regret having one as a kid and not properly caring for it. I felt really bad about it at the time too. Now days I have 36 gallon tank and I strive to take better care of my animals. Not hermit crabs I have fish now. I also have a dog and a cockatiel which I take good care of.

I have had my hermit crabs for 2 and a half years they are all healthy too and I was only 8 when I bought them so this proves that little kids some times can take care of big responsibilitys I'm 10 now ( I have 3 hermit crabs by the way )

I just recently had a baby Hermit Crab dumped on me by a family friend with no info on how to take care of one. I've been doing my research while trying my best to keep him content and alive in my old 5 gallon fish tank. I hope eventually I can give him an upgrade and a friend, he's grown on me in the last week and I wanna see him happy

I got 2 hermit crabs recently from a souvenir shop. The poor crabs were stressed, cramped, and had painted shells. No water, salt water or way of heat either. I brought them home, did a lot of research, and now have managed to give them a proper home (and shells!!) It’s so sad how people can treat hermit crabs so poorly without even knowing 😢

I'm guilty of this. I was young and saw someone selling this outside our school. I got one however it died after a day only. I feel bad. 😢
