What to know about Real IDs as deadline approaches

May 7 is the fast-approaching deadline to get a Real ID. Afterward, you could have a harder time getting into a government building or through airport security without one. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave has more.

If you already have a passport, there’s no need to pay the government again just to add a star to your ID. However, whenever you replace or renew a REAL ID, there will be an additional fee to maintain that designation. It’s unclear why the star—whose sole purpose is to verify legal presence in the United States—couldn’t be a one-time charge for U.S. citizens. It often feels like the government is simply looking for more revenue.

In a few border states, there is Enhanced Drivers license which has a US flag in the corner. That is basically a hybrid Real ID and passport card issued at the state level... it works for this also.

real ID is not only for flying its neede in any federal transactions
an ordinary ID has federal limits
so if you have no real ID and applying for any federal transactions you will have a problem

So, once this is in effect, if someone without a 'Real-ID' is, for example, summoned for jury duty or a defendant in a criminal trial, they won't be allowed to go into the courthouse government building?
