Even though the song is a meme now, within it and the context of Sam's story is the warning never to fight for violence's sake. Sam first started his crusade against injustice but eventually just got a taste for blood and that desire for bloodshed was manipulated by Armstrong. He forgot what he fought for, and why, and even forgot who he used to be. He only found out at the end of his life.
