Potty trained many foster pups and you are so correct that household accidents are the humans fault. Potty training a puppy takes 24 hour commitment but most people have unrealistic expectations and think the pup should know.

When I first got my puppy 8 months ago here in Ohio, the first 24 hours were honestly overwhelming. I had no clue what to expect—potty training accidents, whining, and just trying to get him settled in. I was starting to feel completely lost. But then I found Puppy Book by Luke Carter, and what I found valuable in this book was how practical and easy-to-follow the advice was. It gave me a clear plan for those chaotic first hours and helped me get my puppy settled into his new home. Crates are invaluable for dogs. I always use them in training. When they're trained, then they use the crate as home base.

In the years that I've crate trained my puppies, I've never thought to attach my lead to the crate - allowing to be able to distract/re-focus their attention and communicate without sending them the message of "continue the behavior" to get (train) "your person to come"... brilliant

Our first pound puppy was homed before and clearly had been well trained. She loved being in her box, looked for permission to go through doors, sooo gentle with treats. The other three were a bit more feral, with house training a bare minimum

Our 11-year old sweet boy MJ just got killed in a freak accident right in front of our house and although it normally takes us a year or two before our heart is ready for another furry baby, this loss has been so sudden and tragic and our other sweet dog, who loves other dogs, is really suffering. Our hearts are broken. 💔We are adopting a new puppy on January 2nd and we believe giving our Roxie a new baby sister will help us all start the healing process, and since it’s been YEARS since we have puppy trained, we need all the help I can get. Uncle Sully is such a fantastic dog! Our chocolate lab was 9 when we brought our golden puppy home and she was such a big part of helping bring him out of his shell. He's a bit skittish and was from the outset, and she really helped him learn how to chill, and not be afraid all the time. Its amazing what a good, well mannered and patient adult dog can do to help with the training and acclimation process. Crate training was still a bit of a struggle with the golden, but within about two weeks he was perfect with it. I think where we failed was we had a long drive to get him, and we got our puppy home at 9pm at night, so we had very little time to settle him in before needing to crate him for bed. Not ideal for a first experience, and he screamed bloody murder for hours. He eventually settled, and at no point did he get let out or rewarded for it, but it was a miserable experience for all of us. Do you have any advice for myself or anyone else in a similar situation in future, getting a new puppy home late in the day?
