Real Surgeon and Anesthesiologist react to Dr. Glaucomflecken’s Couples Therapy

Relationships can be tough — and sometimes they need a little “intervention.”

The classic tension between surgeons and anesthesiologists in the OR is the source of many frustrations (and jokes!).

But what if these medical partners sat down with a therapist to work out their differences?

In my new video, Dr. Jessica Compean (an anesthesiologist) and I (a surgeon) react to Dr. Glaucomflecken’s hilarious version of medical couples therapy.

• Can we identify with these frustrations?
• Can the figurative “surgical drape” ever come down between the specialties?
• Could wi-fi and a thermostat be key to working out our differences?

My anesthesiologist was a God-sent during my c-section. 4 days in the hospital before I was finally sent to surgery. Running on only 7 hours of sleep all together. I felt like I was close to death, when I started feeling the cut, but the surgeon was “almost done”. My anesthesiologist quickly jumped to my defence. He said that “she deserves to be pain free”. The table was tilted and more drugs were added. The relief brought me to tears. I was so high on drugs that I couldn’t remember the first time I held my baby, but I will never forget the anesthesiologist that came to my rescue.

I love how the charge nurse is the most feared Mama Bear in the room…
You noticed the Charge Nurse never goes to therapy.
*She doesn’t have time.

Glaucomflecken is absolute gold on his own. This, too, was brilliant.

I love the "50 CC's of blood loss" - I was shocked at the fact that this was the amount given for my surgery, until I realized that this includes only what was lost in the surgery and not what I sprayed all over the ER from my femoral artery prior to said surgery 🤣

Dr Compean actually jumped at the "cut off the WiFi." She felt that one 😂

My Dad was an anaethetist. His best friend (and my god father) was the single most difficult surgeon in the whole hospital. The hospital review did a whole skit on them one year, because you couldn't imagine two more different people. Dad would have probably ended up in surgery if he had not lost the sight in one eye when young, so he was always interested in what was happening on the other side of the drape (and there was no Wi-Fi).
The benefit to me of having Mac as a Godfather was when I got consultants trying to say "and why is the dietitian here in this meeting" I was totally unfazed because they weren't anywhere near as fierce as Mac. If I felt I should be there I was there...

" this is the blood / brain barrier.. " OUCH !
BTW, as a patient, always be nice to your anesthesiologist. If shit goes sideways, they're the ones that keep you alive..

In the middle of my heart stent, I woke, lifted my headed, looked at the image on the monitor, and said, "That looks pretty cool." The surgeon was not pleased and growled an order to the anesthesiologist . Within a few seconds, I was out again.

Comp.socks are awesome and comfy if properly measured (20-30mmhg as preventative) by a competent and qualified fitter…my husband is a surgeon and definitely wears comp.socks, as it really does help with leg edema/fatigue. As a qualified comp. fitter for 20yrs I’ve personally seen the difference in not only my husbands legs but patients also.

Hi Blood Banker here - that's not the usual suspect for a transfusion reaction. The most common TxRx are the allergic and febrile which are attributed to immune responses and cytokines produced in response to the transfusions.

A blood bank should have the time to thoroughly test the blood to avoid the antibody-antigen reaction which are admittedly more servere, but much less common. The times when these are most likely to happen are when the patient is unidentified trauma where we are unable to correlate the patient history with the patient and lack the time for thorough testing.

Loved this doctor. I like all the guest doctors but her personality shined through the screen!

As you might have already guessed, "Malampatti" is a last name. It's named after the doctor who came up with that scale. But what's even more interesting is its etymology. It is a profession-based last name, like 'Archer' or 'Baker' in English. And it literally means "Ointment and Bandage". So, I assume, some male ancestor (the name is patriarchical) of Dr. Malampatti was also a doctor, who earned the name "Malampatti" from his patients or his town-folk!
