Many of our Protestant brothers & sisters claim that only the Bible is the source of authority for Christians (Sola scripture). However, the Bible does not support this claim. Rather, the Bible states that the Church is the source of authority. In 1 Timothy 3:15 (as seen above), St. Paul points out that the Church is the pillar and bulwark of the truth.

Therefore, if the Church (which was founded by Christ and is His bride) is the support and bulwark of the truth, then it can be found in the world. God does not leave us in confusion, but He guides us and unites us under this institution- this "household of God."

This is, John Bergsma, a former Protestant pastor. He is a professor of theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, in Steubenville, Ohio. I have his book, Bible Basics for Catholics which I like. He's written many.

Protestant: "Sola Scriptura!!"
Catholic: "You clearly need to work on your listening comprehension skills."
Protestant: "You worship Mary!"
Catholic: "Ohh nooo, not that again."

So by your argument, if the Church is the support and defense of the truth. And the truth is God and the word of God (2 Timothy 3:14-17). Then isn’t the Church supporting and defending the Bible. Therefore making the Word of God the ultimate authority? I think you may have your apologetics mixed up here pastor. In no way, shape, or form is Sola Scriptura stating that the Church is to be held to “only tradition” and that the Bible is up for interpretation. It means that the Bible is the sole authority in which all must act, and the Church MUST reflect that.

Two of my favorite New Testament verses is 2Pet1:20-21, “20 First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” They put a big hole in sola scriptura.

Pharisees and Sadducees.. Jesus spoke to both of them. Both believed that their doctrines were correct and the other was false. “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James‬ ‭1‬:‭27‬ ‭NKJV‬‬. When you begin speaking like your specific belief (Protestant OR Catholic) is the one and only correct way, you begin to sound exactly like the religious systems the Christ himself opposed.

church of the living God." The "living God" was a name often associated with God the Father in the Old Testament. For example, Psalm 42:2 says, "My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?"

Next, Paul also calls the church "a pillar and buttress [foundation] of the truth." Interestingly, Jacob spoke similar words in Genesis 28:22: "this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. …" This is often applied by those seeking to grant additional authority to "the Church, " meaning the human leaders of some particular denomination. However, context shows this to be the opposite of Paul's intent. Verse 14 made it clear that the written words (e.g. The Bible) as presented by Paul are the real authority.

It is also important to note Paul's use of particular Greek words here. Stylos means a "pillar, column, prop, or support" and is used only here, in Revelation 3:12, and in Revelation 10:1. Hedraiōma means a "prop or support" and appears only in this New Testament verse. Both words come from Greek roots which refer to something that steadies or stiffens or holds. More to the point, these are completely different words than used for other occurrences of "foundation" in English Bibles.
1st Corinthians 3:11 for instance, uses the word themelion, literally meaning the "foundation of a building" or "initial and founding principles of an idea, " in reference to Christ.
Paul's point here is not that the church is, itself, the source of spiritual truth or authority. Nor is it that the church, or its human leaders, are the ultimate arbiters of God's word on earth. Rather, the church is meant to be the "support" connecting the foundation of Christ to the fallen world.

Christ is the head of that church. The problem is when you put the traditions of men over the verified teaching of the HEAD of our church in scripture. As well as the men he trusted to write scripture. So, in essence, scripture is representation of the authority of the church that Jesus Christ established and we must conform to his teachings, which aligns with scripture. We cannot redefine or change his teachings. Man has no authority to change the laws of God, which catholics have boldly done with the 10 commandments. The 2nd is omitted and the 10th is split into two. Look it up, it's actually historically true.

The Church has a terrible history. Let's hope this isn't the truth

St.paul also says the scriptures is sufficient. So ill take the the accurate historical documents written by eye witnesses at the time of other eye witnesses, over hundreds of years of people who took scriptures out of context. So you get churches that raise a human like Mary to Goddess level, pray to beads, pray to relics, make a purgatory out of a couple verses that dont clarify a holding area, a pope who implies that other religions like islam pray to the same God, nonsense. I pray that if you're in this church buy a bible and read it, instead of being indoctrinated by those who teach outside the scriptures.

Reading 1 Tim 3:1-14 describes a church with Bishops and Deacons. Oddly familiar, hmmm.

Pillar and Bulwark: Support and foundation and or defense.

This means the church supports and anchors the truth. The church itself is not the author nor the truth itself, the Bible is.

The church is just a table or prop on which the word/truth stands.

I have done some study in response. According to the AI, "pillar and bulwark" is a defensive structure, the defense system, not the foundation.
And when you read this passage in context, you see that it tails a discussion of the qualifications of elders and deacons. Interestingly, it does not discuss the authority of Peter as the head of this church, but of the leadership of a local congregation.

It appears to me, then, that we need high quality elders and deacons in a local congregation (Catholic or otherwise) so that congregation is protected from heresy and sin.
"Sola Scriptura", in my opinion, is not in any way discussed in this passage.

This is ridiculous. The Bible is the living, breathing word of God. Where do you think Catholics get their entire belief system from? Thin the air? No it’s the Bible! Then they add a bunch of man-made dogma’s and doctrines.
