I got kicked out one of our community churches when I was *SEVEN YEARS OLD* because I asked the pastor too many questions. He told my mom I was causing a disturbance, even though I kept to myself and only spoke to the adults (not like I was "influencing the other kids") and told her not to bring me back until I learned respect. All I did was ask question he couldn't answer.

When I told my parents I was atheist, they responded "Us too"

Me: Hey mom, I'm a deist.
Mom: (starts to tear up)
Mom: Why??
Me: I just... I don't know. It doesn't make sense.
Mom: (leaves)
Mom: (cries)

Me: Hey mom, I'm an atheist.
Mom: Do you hate us?
Me: What?
Mom: Did something happen?
Me: ...

A few weeks later...

Dad: I don't care what you think!

A few months later...

Dad: You go to church or you don't live under this house!

Sometimes I wish I'd just shut my damn mouth.

I told my mom i didn't believe in God and she was like...super shocked, she started crying and blaming herself and asking if i worshipped the devil or something. Honestly i didn't know she was that religious, its not like we went to church that often when i was younger. I understand why she would want to hold on to her religion though, its like a safety net for her, for me its just a blindfold. I hope she accepts it soon, maybe she'll stop sending me bible quotes.

I took it a step further.I told my parents that I am an atheist and convinced them that atheism is the way to go.
Now they are both atheists too!:-D
*True story!*

Damn my parents are awesome. I just walked up and said I was an atheist and they just said "Ok." There was no tension, no argument, nothing. Just an "Ok." Now we usually talk about religion, what it does wrong, what it does right, and it's a very good time and we learn a lot by talking to each other. I guess I'm very lucky.

I am a 1-year-since atheist. My whole family is full Sunday church-goers. My dad hates gay marriage. I go to a Catholic school. I'm suspecting my brother is an atheist, too, but I'd never work up the courage to ask HIM. In fact, I delete all my history of watching your videos, and I can't even subscribe to the channel - out of fear of getting kicked out of the house. See, (and I do not say this arrogantly) I feel I must be the only one (besides my brother of whom I have good suspicions) who has thought about the value of reason in this Southern Catholic Coastline.

I can only thank the internet. Christianity, before I was 13, had shut off all logical scientific thinking. YouTube has really helped.

In 10-15 years, when, or if, I have a sustaining, well-paying job, I will reveal my atheism... unless I find my brother is an atheist, then we can work together.

I'm almost 40 and I still haven't told my mom; I don't see any benefit to her knowing, but I could see a lot of harm coming from it.

It took some balls from my part to open up to my parents, and to tell them that I am an atheist, it's hard for them because, in my case, I grew up in a Catholic home, I was baptized, and obviously, the first reaction (specially my moms) was to think that she did something wrong, that I was angry about God, and my answer was what opened her eyes (like a week later). I said "Mom, I'm an atheist because you teached me how to think, to not follow everything just because everybody does it, you made me smart, and I realized that  I don't need "God" in my life". My "mistake" if I can call it that way, was to open up to my whole family at the same time, it was insulting at a certain point that an aunt actually told me "you are wrong, do you know God can be really upset and bad things can happen to you?". I just told her, "if so, he is a fucking prick".

I told my dad I was atheist. He asked me 'why' and I said I not only had doubts, but whole new convictions based on evidence I had found (most of them paradoxes or holes in the bible.) I really didn't expect much of a reply. He told me right away that he had doubts as well. I talked to him about my points and he ended up telling me, "so, I guess that's what I am as well. I'm a non-believer, aka atheist."

He had believed in god mostly because that was how he grew up, and he had always had doubts. My mom is still christian, but completely respects my opinions. She thinks of me as a much more intelligent person than her and my dad does too. They both, together with my entire family, think that I do not need religion in my life because they say I'm good just as I am. Only my aunt kind of got upset. And my grandma completely forgot we had even discussed about my position.

I told my mother that I did not believe in god and she said "I must have failed to raised you properly". We have never talk about it again, but we still have a great relationship. My dad on the other hand, he is not the type of person you can tell stuff like this. He is a really old fashion type of guy. Has high beliefs in the Christian god, extremely homophobic, does not want anything to do with anyone that does not believe in his faith. I would never tell my father that I don't believe in god. I guess it depends on your parents if you should tell them or not.

I'm an atheist, both my parents are Catholic and I'm debating how I should tell them, if at all.

At 46 I no longer have to worry about what my family thinks about my atheism, but it's still a problem at work. Bosses, coworkers, most at my jobs have been christians to varying degrees. I'd hear their insipid conversations about "The Lowered" and grind my teeth. They'd try to draw me into their discussions, sometimes bluntly asking what church I go to, just assuming that I do. I eventually hit upon a strategy that works quite well. I tell all people I work with that I do not discuss religion or politics at work as a personal policy. Gives me an air of mystery and makes them keep guessing. They eventually gave up trying trick questions too.

I came out as an atheist on Facebook. Needless to say, it didn't go over so well.

My parents got angry at me because I mocked him for believing in an all powerful invisible man which we have no proof of. Religion has power over them because they blindly obey and don't question their beliefs
