I adopted my BM at 1 year old, home protection trained. His original owners weren’t patient and loving and didn’t know he needed a job to do. They told me he was the worst dog on the planet. I let him settle in for a few weeks and he was my best friend for 16 years. Great drive, liked “helping” around the house, followed me everywhere. I actually used him to train other dogs/puppies for basic commands. Always tempered his strength with other dogs and kids. Best dog in the world and I miss him all the time. He had more charisma and personality than most people. Not a dog for everybody. But with the right people and knowing how sensitive and smart they are they can be a good addition to a family. I think his original owners problem was that he was smarter than they were. :p

One other thing, not sure about owning a Belgium Malinois? You can do a test drive so to speak by applying to a Malinois Rescue to be a foster home, you can do it part time as a relief person while other people who foster go on vacation, need time off for an event, emergency or full time until that dog is adopted. This could even lead to you finding a Malinois that matches your personality and lifestyle, you'll also be helping a good cause.

I am currently fostering a young dog and she is only 28% BM, and most of the rest of her GSD. Let me tell you that even just a quarter this breed, she is always ready to go!! We have had her for around a month now and she’s one of my favorite dogs I’ve ever had. So cheerful and playful and cuddly and SMART! Loves my kids and my other dogs. She is always ready to explore something new.

My Malinois was kicked out of French Ring training for being too friendly and lacking the drive. She is one of the best family dogs I’ve ever met and isn’t overly energetic. I thank god every night that he blessed me with such beautiful loving dogs.
