Cheap drill guide review

In this video I am doing a drill guide review of a product from Amazon called The Best Woodworking Drill Locator in 2021.
However I can confirm it isn't the best anything! in the video I run through the major fault with it and confirm that you shouldn't buy this product!

Got a similar one from Temu, and it's fine for $11 U.S. The threaded piece that passes through the bearing to affix the chuck below is much larger than yours in order to snugly fit in the bearing and widens at the top to not let it slide through / out once the chuck is threaded on. So none of the wiggling you experienced is happening here. Others may be correct in that you should have assembled the chuck with the bearing sandwiched in between which is how mine went together. I did have to clear out one of the holes for the aluminum rod to pass fully through the top piece but was easy enough with my battery Dremel. Being largely plastic like a cheap tool, it will take some careful guiding two handed to not get it to flex as I think too much angular force would crack the top and release the bearing if not some other bit of the plastic giving way, but I think I can get some decent holes after adding a bit of petroleum jelly to the aluminum shafts for it to slide a bit smoother and by carefully guiding it down with two hands and making sure there's no twisting or angular force being applied, just straight downward.

I would never pay the crazy woodpecker prices. There's a Milescraft on Amazon for $33 U.S. that looks all metal, but I will probably use this thing 5 times if at all and am confident I can get it to do the job.

Hi I think the chuck may be assembled wrong! remove the hexagon shaft from the chuck, pass the hexagon shaft through the bearing and refit the chuck. the chuck then can not fall out.

Always nice to see someone explain why the expensive original is still worthwhile, and the cheap copy is useful only as balloon ballast.

There's a Temu version of this tool that looks similar, it's twice the price and has excellent reviews from other YouTubers. It actually looked like a solid product and it worked pretty well.

Hi Matt,
I bought the same drill guide from Banggood and it arrived this morning all assembled with foam inserts to stop any parts moving during transport. I have checked the chuck and there is absolutely no wobble or movement. It did cost £50 however. I have not used it yet but no doubt time will tell.

I really liked the idea of this tool, but $259 is certainly too high. Therefore, I also want to purchase an analog of such a tool from Ali. But then why don't you try to change the bearing holding the chuck and strengthen the guides with a PTFE tape (for example)?

Phew, just about bought the same one haha. Good real review! Just some constructive criticism, would be nice for the audio to be uniform in your videos. Goes from soft voiceovers to loud front of camera audio. Nasty when wearing earphones and it would be a simple fix in post-production. Just a small thing to up the quality and viewing experience! Nonetheless, very informative!

the reason why the drill chuck falls of is because its suposed to be locked in place from the top with a different bolt than the one you have, bought mine from temu and it works fine although its not the best drill stand out there.

You have the plastic version, there is also an aluminum version which is good. I bought it from AliExpress

On my similar guide, the chuck goes on the bottom of the bearing and the drill adapter goes on the top of the bearing, thus sandwiching the bearing.

There are several The Rockler drill Guide I did not like because it does not have a return spring and it does not have any way to set a distance from the edge of a board and repeat this seting on as many boards as needed. The woodpeckers guide is the only one to be able to do this.

Bought similar knock off. Had exact same problem. Drill chuck fell out, didn’t work. Bearing crappy and fell out. Amazon banned the seller, so I’m sure I won’t get my money back. Paid about $30 USD. Happened about 18 months ago or so. The woodpeckers version is more than a DIY bench drill press.

Thanks for the review. I almost bought one. I have researched dozens by reviews and all so far have runout problems according to those writing reviews. Drill presses aren't much better if under $200.00 US. I have a Shopsmith a few miles away I will be using fir the camera mounts I was to install here. L

I was looking at this same drill guid on temu and I was wondering how bad this thing really was. Some of the photos actually show a woodpecker drill guide. It's a ripoff if I've ever seen one.

Surely the £19.99 price tag was a good enough indicator to avoid this product?

I was just about to buy this, I mean it looks identical to the woodpeckers one so can it really be that much worse? Turns out the answer is yes, so thanks a lot for saving me the bother. Did you find anything remotely usable yet?

I've had bad experiences with inexpensive tools out of China that turn out to be very cheap copies of quality products produced in the states and Europe. Unfortunately, there is nothing more expensive than a cheap tool.
