Been in the plumbing industry since 1989, trained my son to be a plumber at age 17.He worked every summer and off and on when he could during his high School years. Both my wife and myself worked to be able to send him through college. Before he went away to college he told me
That "being a plumber Just wasn't his dream".I was hurt a little bit when he told me this but respected him for telling me this.He is now selling medical equipment to all the major hospitals here on the west coast. He not only sells the equipment but also supervises the
Installation's of very expensive complicated machines.later he
Told me that his training with me
Has been "invaluable"to his success. He now makes more money than me and and I am Very
Proud of him!

FYI My dad has been a plumber since he was 18 yrs old, then started his own company. My mom never worked while we were growing up, and they had 3 kids. And dad was home pretty much every night. A great career in my opinion.

I've been a plumber apprentice for around 6 months. some days are hard and I get home late, some days are easy but, at the end of the day I come home feeling like I accomplished a good days work and helped someone out. I'm 31 years old and wish I would've started this when I was younger.

Last year I had my worst year since 2009 and I still made 89K. If you are enthusiastic about products and are highly motivated to do your best, even in a crawl space where no one will ever see your work, you have the right attitude to be a plumber. I love going to work every day. I'll be 69 next week and have NO plans to retire. Not long ago a young electrician told me that he could never be a plumber because we have to deal with human waste. Well, sometimes we do. I looked him right in the eye and told him that dealing with shit is no problem for a man. And it isn't.

Prior to retiring last year, I made $123, 000 (2016) doing plumbing service and repairs. This does not include a full benefits package valued at another $15, 000 from my employer. (Yes, I did this working for someone other than myself). Plumbing was a great career choice for me for over 40 years. If you are mechanically inclined, like working with your hands, solving problems, and possess “people skills”, you may want to explore a career as a Service Plumber. New construction plumbing has its’ merits as well. Our motto is “We protect the health of a Nation”, and we do.

lot of parents pressure their kids to be a doctor/lawyer/engineer when it's very likely it's not the way for them.

My high school offered plumbing as a intro course as well as wood, metal, welding, and mechanics.

The reason plumbers are making 75 to $100, 000 a year is because nobody's getting into it. It's the law of supply and demand.

You will never go wrong choosing a highly skilled trade. The trade has been good to me and my family. It has allowed us to do some cool things, visit nice places, prepare for retirement and own a home.

Sadly, I have friends and family who went to college for years and made the mistake of majoring in a field that just does not pay well.

Trades is where it is at.

Good luck to all who are pondering or entering.

I’m a sophomore in high school and I already know that I want to pursue the field of trades. Where I live in Indiana it’s in such a high demand and and I would love to do hands on stuff while working my job. I am blessed of the opportunity to be able to have to ask questions and gain knowledge of these jobs, my uncle and dad both are in a apprenticeship program and are one year off getting their journeyman’s license in plumbing and I wanna do this cause of the fact that it’s not as hard as I thought it would be able to apply for one considering the certifications needed for it. Even though I advise it, you don’t NEED to be a straight A student be able to attend plumbing school which I think is great. I can’t wait to learn more about this field.

I’m 13 and I’m starting to question if wasting about 4 years in college would really solve anything
