The hardest part is finding someone to take you on as an apprentice

I’m a 33 year old second generation plumber my dad took no safety precautions and never tried to save his knees or anything now he’s falling apart. I wear knee pads to every job and I bought a hydraulic lift at harbor freight I use to lift my water heaters. Makes a huge difference man

I am 72 this year, I started plumbing in 1967 an I just went back to work in an open shop. I am starting a plumber training school for helpers in the shop. I hope to teach them the correct way to do service calls and be safe as well. I have had both knees replaced, 4 back surgeries, carpel tunnel surgery twice on each hand, 4 hip replacements, and other things that I won’t mention. I will be training in the proper way to move heavy things and working smart and safe. I appreciate your videos and your advice, thank you for your message.

Former sprinkler fitter apprentice here. Best advice: pay attention to the old timers! They know how to do this stuff the easiest and most efficient way. Don't be a hero, take care of your body (yoga, cardio, stretching, etc.) and you will go far in the pipe trades!!

You single handily have convinced me to start this trade. I’m calling all of the most popular companies and see if they need help!

I use a kneeling pad when I need to. lots of guys in the trade and other trades used to laugh at me because I used to take it everywhere. The best part was at the end of the day I was never complaining about how my knees felt like they were.

To become a plumber is simple!
You need to first to go a plumbers training school.
But first you need 2 years of experience to join the school.
Once you have completed the school, you will need 2 years of experience in the field before you can become an apprentice.
And of course, 2 years of experience to finally become a plumber.
it's that easy.

I started in 1972 so for 48 yrs my son is a plumber also and I told him take care of your body. I have had 3 hip replacements on one hip and my knee scoped, but I would not change a thing. I loved every moment.

I'd recommend that apprentice plumbers work with Sewers & Drains in the beginning. Performing service calls requiring drain cleaning and leak fixing. This gets the candidate to understand the great sense of responsibility on his shoulders BEFORE working on Supply pipes. I was told by my instructor years ago,

''The supply pipe system continues to leak until the City runs out of water''.

Thus there exists a greater sense of responsibility on the shoulders of the Supply system plumber. He learns to fix what he can within a limited amount of time that doesn't greatly inconvenience the residents in the building. The young plumber must learn to both THINK and BE OBSERVANT.

These were the most crucial statements that I followed in the beginning.

You said it all man. Don't be a brute! you don't have to lift everything by yourself, you don't have to power your way through everything. Been Plumbing since 2003, but now a mechanical estimator for the last 8 years. both elbows have repetitive strain injuries from being a brute, lifting everything myself and trying to power through everything! Dr's told me i shouldn't be working with my arms above my head or repetitive pushing and pulling motions (or as we plumbers like to call it, PLUMBING). lifelong damage at 37 years old. other commentators already said Knee pads but in case you didn't see it, WEAR YOUR DAMN KNEE PADS!

Love the message of being specific about what your desired end result before you begin to learn the trade. Also the bloopers are great.

Mr Wakefield, I see me working on already made homes, Residential Plumbing, on maintenance service, repair and upgrading plumbing, doing masonry demolition work to make it through to the piping in the masonry. Here in Puerto Rico, most homes are made of masonry block n concrete houses, this is because of hurricanes zone in the Caribbean, wood houses doesn't survive storms and hurricanes, so masonry block n reinforced concrete is the rule in construction here. Also considered Masonry work combined with plumbing, as for masonry repair and home remodeling, along with plumbing work. Most tradesman contractors here have demolition equipment, chipping hammers and the like. Since I intend to live and work close to home, Residential plumbing is the option to go! Greetings!

Yoga/pilates and exercise, it might suck or not be cool, but it will keep your body strong for longer. Especially the yoga and pilates.

The hardest thing about plumbing isn't the plumbing. It's everything else that revolves around it.
