It was not meant to give you the Christmas spirit it was meant to make people aware of the suffering and starvation that was going on in Africa

It's raising money for famine relief, not celebrating Christmas. This was the inspiration for We Are The World

This song was the forerunner to Live Aid & the USA We are the World

This isn’t the American version of “We are the World.”

Without this song “Do they know it’s Christmas?” there’s no “We are the World.”

This was the inspiration for the Quincy and the Americans doing their song

This song was in response to the severe famine in Ethiopia that BBC had covered in the U.K. for the whole year. It was an idea that came together in 48 hours. Writing the song, getting the artists, producing and releasing this song in time for release at Christmas 🎉

This song has raised millions for charity/famine relief in Ethiopia.

Plus Xmas is a correct abbreviation of Christmas. “X” being an abbreviation of the Greek letter Chi and the Greek word for Christ. Use of “Xmas” is traced back to at least the 16th century church.

George damaged his own Christmas song going to number one by appearing on this. And then gave all proceeds for that single to Band Aid. Beautiful man. RIP.

Here is a complete list of the artists who sang on this song:

The list of all of the artists involved.
U2 (Bono), Phil Collins, Bob Geldof, Steve Norman, Duran Duran (John Taylor, Simon Le Bon, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, Nick Rhodes), Paul Young, Spandau Ballet (Tony Hadley, Martin Kemp, Gary Kemp, Martin Ware, Steve Norman, John Keeble), Chris Cross, Midge Ure (Ultra Vox), Simon Crow (The Boomtown Rats), Marilyn, Glenn Gregory (Heaven 17), Jody Watley, Paul Weller, Kool & The Gang (James “JT” Taylor, Robert Bell, Dennis Thomas), George Michael, Culture Club (Boy George, Jon Moss), Sting, Johnny Fingers – Rick Parfitt, Franics Rossi (Status Quo), Siohban Fahey, Keren Woodward, Sarah Dallin (Bananarama)

The message at the end of the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" is to feed the world and let people know it's Christmas time. The song's message is a response to the song's beginning, which suggests that people can spread joy and throw their arms around the world during Christmastime. The song's message is a call to action to make the world a better place.
"Do They Know It's Christmas?" is a charity song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia from 1983–1985. The song was first recorded by Band Aid, a supergroup of popular British and Irish musical acts.

One of the children shown in horrific footage came back years later to a Concert. She had survived and was beautiful. She came to say thank you, bless her.

USA For Africa learned from Band Aid. Probably an unpopular opinion, but this one is way better. And it was not meant to give christmas vibes, but to raise awareness for the famine in Africa.

This song chokes me up every year, the message is really important.

And it’s not just about “praying”, it’s about bringing to light the suffering, poverty and hunger the world over, particularly in Africa, the chant at the end is “Feed the world, Let them know it’s Christmastime”

If you were born in 1969 this is one of the forever 80s christmas songs beside Frankie goes to Hollywood, Wham, Chris Rea or Whitney Houston.

We are the world had 3 months to be produced, after this groundbreaker...this was written, and performed in 48 hours to get as much cash out to Ethiopia as it possibly could, in lightning fast time...context, is everything.
As for the 'best' singers around at the time being on U.S.A. for Africa...a very brave statement...especially looking at the time period, the eighties..a period in music history, when British music ruled soo completely, that you're all still going through it all to this day!!
Merry Xmas 😊

This was to raise money for Ethiopia in 1984. Live Aid was the live concert that resulted from this campaign.

All the sales from this single went to the charity.

The UK’s favourite non traditional Christmas song is Fairytale of New York by the Pogues and it’s a banger.

Paul Young (I adore him) sang Every time you go away(you take a piece of me with you)

It was this song that galvanized/shamed the USA, and the rest of the world, to get off their butts and assist Africa from starving.

You DEFINITELY want to react to Paul Young's 'Everytime You Go Away". An absolute classic!

Fun fact; Last Christmas was released by George Michael with the intent to achieve a number 1 song at Christmas. However, along came this song and when Bob Geldof aksed George to play a part, he did so willingly knowing that the Band Aid song would probably stop his song from reaching number 1 at Christmas. And so it did. In 2023, 39 years after Last Christmas was released, it reached number 1 at Christmas. God bless George Michael!

This is not your standard Christmas song. This is a fund raiser for the famine in Ethiopia. The line that Bono sings particularly hits home .

This was my childhood Christmas anthem. Always puts me into the Christmas mood! I was a big fan of Paul Young (the first singer) when I was younger.
