The lead singer, David Gates, wrote this song for his father, who died before David achieved success.
One of their best songs is "If"

Bread is one of those bands that does not get the recognition that they really truly deserve. They have always been one of my favorites since I was a young girl in the 70's. They just did not do enough music.

I am a child of the 1970s...i came into adulthood in the mid-seventies...Bread was as important to me as was The Carpenters, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and Led Zeppelin. Beautiful music always moves you emotionally... never be ashamed of those emotions. It shows you're human.

My niece and I performed this at my Mothers funeral. When she couldn't continue, I took over the vocals, and soon everyone in the congregation joined in to finish the song. This is what we used to call, back in the 60's and 70's, "A happening". A moment that will stay with me forever.

My mom died four months ago. When Alzheimer's took her mind, our conversations became me singing to her and this was often on the playlist. My singing sucks, but she loved it. That's how she was.

Love you mom.

As a 75yr. old, white male I have to say I appreciate this young rappers emotions related to this song. With this connection we could be close friends. Big like from me.

As a sappy teen I would play “Bread” songs over and over. Singing along and bemoaning my life. Sometimes one needs to wallow to go forward. “Bread” helped me do that emotionally.

They got their name when following a bread truck, and yes, the song is written about losing a parent. One week ago I went to a concert to see Toast, a Bread tribute band. This song had the audience literally in tears. Check out Toast! They are incredible and as close to the real thing as you can get!

I've heard a number of reactions to this song, but as far as I can remember, you're the first one to perceive the meaning of it after the first verse.

Music today doesn't compel this sort of emotional response in people. This is a lost art of music from the past. I hope some day we return to this sort of music, where lyrics have a message, and is relatable.

You nailed it. This song is about his dad. It hits me hard as well. I lost both of my parents 11 days apart, 3 years ago, my mom to Alzheimer's, my dad to Covid. I miss them both, but my mom especially, because we talked every day until Alzheimer's made her forget how to use the phone. This is such a good reaction. This is my first time watching one of your reactions. It won't be the last.

I’m almost 59 years old. I’ve heard this song almost forever but I never thought it might be about parents. I always presumed it was about a lover that had been lost. I lost my Dad when I was 19 and my Mom when I was 22. So now you got me bawling like a baby and, you know, that’s OK. Thank you for your perspective; it really has opened my eyes and touched my heart profoundly. I will hear this song differently forever. Thank you. I’m not crying, you’re crying. 😉🙏🏻

It's wonderful for us who grew up with these artists to see you experience them for the first time.
Blessings to you and your young family.

On Christmas 2021, I lost my eldest son. This was his memorial song from me. He was a beautiful soul and I remain broken.

This is why the music of the 70’s hits so hard. That emotion doesn’t exist in music anymore. We had it good.
