Patsy died in a plane crash coming home from a charity concert in 1963 at the ripe old age of 30. She had the purest voice country music has ever known, but, as they say, only the good die young. Amazingly, she survived an automobile accident in 1961 that almost killed her and kept her hospitalized for over a month. Her career was short but her legacy is forever.

I am a hospice nurse. One of my first patients just died at 91 years old. Her life was unfairly difficult and painful. I care about all my patients but my connection with her was so special. The hospice I work with doesn't have a music therapist. My parents are 84 and 88 and I grew up listening to Patsy Cline. I try to get to know what my patients liked when they were younger and meet them there. My patient loved Patsy and I sang these songs to her at every visit. She had horrible trauma in her past but music brought her so much joy.

Too many singers today think that just belting, being loud, doing runs the whole song is selling the song. No, the quietness, the strength, the storytelling, the drawing you in to listen to every word. That is the power.

Have you noticed how so many 'old time' singers just stand and sing, letting the song and the voice do the work. And compare how modestly the women dressed in those days compared with today's singers.
This is such a beautiful song.

Patsy Cline is the hallmark of vocal perfection. The urgency and inflection of her delivery is impeccable. She is the Queen of ALL music. No one ever delivered like Patsy Cline.

When Willie Nelson first wrote this song, no country singer wanted to record it because it contains several chords, more than the three chords that was standard for country songs at the time. But Patsy Cline's manager, Owen Bradley, urged her to record it, presumably because he knew that she would have no problem with all of the chord changes. Unfortunately, in the first recording session, Patsy was in pain from bruised ribs from a recent car accident, which prevented her from hitting some of the notes. She took three weeks off to recover, and when she returned, she nailed the song in one take. Crazy.
