My husband met me when my son was 3. He adopted him. We went on happily married, having many more children. When our youngest three sons were ages 6.6 (twins) & 7, my husband died, at only 45 yrs old. Our eldest son was in his 20s, and he has stepped up in his brothers' lives as a father-type figure. I once was thanking him for how much he has helped and all he has done for his brothers. He responded, "I'm just paying Dad back, doing for his sons what he did for me." I cried for 3 days. Yes, this song hits me hard.

I dedicated this song to my dad at my wedding back in 2018. My father basically didn't give a shit about me and wasn't around and this man stepped up with me at the age of 1yrs old and filled those shoes. He is now a retired 45yr OTR owner operator truck who has also hauled for our military and federal agencies. He was gone for weeks at a time but when he was home, I always ran out to the truck when he arrived and helped him get his bags out the truck and gave him huge hugs. He cared for me in the hardest way possible but loves me very much. Now it's been my turn to take care of not only him, but my mother. He sacrificed a lot while I was growing up. Now I must sacrifice for him. He has battled cancer and my motheris going through her own battle of cancer and I am there 24/7 to do whatever is needed. They are almost done with all their treatments. I'm just glad I was able to bring in a grandkid before it was too late. My daughter is 8yrs old and they absolutely love her to death.

My dad was this dad. He married my mom when I was 4, and he never treated me as anything less than than his blood. Even after they split up when I was in my 20s, he made sure I knew that I was still his son as far as he was concerned. I got to play this song for him on his deathbed and tell him how much I appreciated him. I'm really grateful that we had that moment.
