Im from England, we were taught in high school about slavery as it was a big part of our history from the Romans, celts, the vikings, Barbary pirates and so on. We were also taught about how the black African people sold other black tribes into slavery and our involvement in the slave trade and our involvement in stopping slavery.

I live not far from a slave gathering Island its called lundy island in the bristol channel uk .north africans held it and gathered slaves from the uk and sold them in north africa .This was prior to the transatlantic slave trade or western colonialism.

Slavery in america started when a man was taken to court by his two indentured servants as they worked their contract to be free men and their "owner" didnt want to give it to them. Anthony johnson defended with "i paid for these men therefor i am the owner" and the judge ruled that he was infact correct. He paid for them and they were his to do what he wanted. This ruling made servants property or a product and could no longer earn the freedom their contracts stated. Which made the two servants (one black and one white) into slaves. Which is when slavery was defined in america. I dont do well with numbers so the year and etc have left my brain. Just look up anthony johnson. Youll find it if you know what researching is.
