That anecdote at the end hits home for me. I'm a black man who also wanted to be a pilot. I went to the Air Force Academy, but wasn't medically qualified to fly at the time. Instead, I took jobs and assignments nobody else wanted for about 7 years and kept pestering doctors about the medical standards, and I just found out that I'm going to pilot training this year. I had multiple friends, mentors, and leaders that helped me make it happen. Some were white, some were black, and some were neither. I'm making my dreams happen because I never gave up and accepted the help that was offered to me, no matter what the person offering looked like.

Thomas Sowell wants everyone to succeed. And he's not afraid to tell the truth about how you get there. The truth is, that its never easy, its always going to take grit and hard work. Sometimes it'll feel unfair, but that is life. Blaming others will only fill you with resentment and hopelessness.
