just a historical reminder here that needs to be taught in our school systems. the southern democrats as they became know as almost cost the starting of this country from the beginning because they wanted to keep slaves. now they want that removed from history so they can say they didnt do it.

This man is by far the greatest American Intellectual of the 2nd half of the 20th century... even though I’m sure he would hate being called an intellectual

I've encountered countless examples of people talking about history while ... applying 21 century standards, and/or reality to the events they were talking about. It's "facepalm stuff".

Slavery was endemic everywhere in the world at the time.
Today it's still endemic in some parts of the world. I'll leave it to you to figure out where.

I am so grateful for the wisdom of Thomas Sowell and I want the world to know of his miraculous genius but I also don’t want to share him and keep him all to myself. I know that’s crazy but I value this man’s excellence more than anything. If someone does not behave in kind. I am insulted. Thank you Dr. Sowell for sharing yourself to me. My sincerest appreciation!

Thousands of years of what was considered normal and acceptable would not have been changed by the mere stroke of a pen.

"Or do consequences matter to those who are trying to score points?"

That is a great question. Sadly, I think we know the answer...

Many people don't know, and some don't want to acknowledge, that an 1860 census showed that _free blacks_ owned approximately 10, 000 slaves. And fewer want to admit that American Indians, such as Choctaw and Chicasaw owned black slaves as well, and that slavery in the Indian nations ended a year or two after the US ended slavery, and it was because of US negotiations.

I don't remember what I was taught about the implications of the 3/5ths compromise, (whether it was inherently racist or not) But It wasn't until I was in my first year of college that I was made privy to the logic that it was in fact an ANTI-slavery measure taken to both 1) keep the union together, and 2) cut the pro-slavery representation in congress.

What a beautiful argument for NOT imposing modern moral standards on historical events! One of the best I've ever heard in the context of slavery. Slavery is reprehensible indeed by modern morality; but necessary, somewhat tolerable, and even marginally acceptable at the time! Imagine US history had there been 7 colonies in the North and 6 in the South -- I can't even go there. At the same time, we need to (and do) recognize the suffering of the slaves themselves; another horror story I can't even fathom.

It’s also worth noting that when the US was first born and the Constitution written, slavery was already naturally dying out, as it simply wasn’t economically viable, so many people just assumed that officially abolishing it would be unnecessary. That all changed when the cotton gin was invented.

Washington and Jefferson did not free their slaves because there was a law from British rule that made it illegal to free you own slaves. Now ask yourself how many Americans were freeing their slaves that it was a problem big enough that the King across the ocean had to make a law forbiding it?

Thank you very much for the great explanation, I didn't know this.

It's so foolish then common misconception that people in the north weren't racist and everybody in the South was racist.
they were still slaves in the north as well as many racists but a key factor is the fact that they had industry.
If you look at the south at the time more than 75% of their total production was agricultural.
it was much easier for the north to get rid of slavery than it was the South regardless of moral principles
