8:58 - Why Back-End Profits matter at a Traditional Car Dealership

THG didn’t give Car Dealers their Bad Reputation. For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED it by being the masters of predatory selling. They stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. While the business has had record setting profits, Dealers never stop telling Car Buyers “We’re losing money!” That’s the bed Car Dealers custom built for themselves. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!

The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Elizabeth. Tons of time and research goes into every show, planning for weeks, several projects always on the table, all with the goal of getting it exactly right. From Automotive News Updates to vehicle shopping advice and assistance, The Homework Guy Team is the best there is.

My daughter just purchased a used Honda. The dealer added a fee "security system" for $699 and "replacement insurance" for $299. She called me and having watched many of your videos, I told her tell them to take it off. I said the second was just junk and someone else already paid for any security system and to tell her to remove it.
That said they couldn't maybe she can pick a different car. Really? Yes! She said NO and said she was done and leaving. They took off both junk fees. There was a $85 doc fee I said was OK. No other fees!
Thanks Kevin!

I have bought my last two cars from a car rental agency. They were no haggle dealers. They let me test drive the cars. And, they provided me with a clear, written history of the cars. Also, they offered a 1yr/12k power train warranty as well. I was very pleased with the whole process and never regretted the experience.

Royal Buick in Tucson is a no-haggle dealer, Kia, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. I bought a 2020 Buick Encore that MSRP'd at $27, 185 and their price was $26, 090. I got all applicable discounts and rebates and no junk fees except the usual Dealer Doc Fee (which was less than the discount) and no hassle. "No" meant "NO" and it was accepted without argument. And YES, I did test drive the actual car I bought. I got $6, 522 in rebates and full KBB Trade in on my trade. I put $3000 cash down and financed $12, 171 which I am paying off at $1, 000 per month.

I was avoiding these types of sellers because I was not informed! Great info.

I walked into a dealership with the homework guy hoodie on and it took 45 minutes to find a salesperson to work with me and the sales floor was crawling with them

Having worked for CarMax and other "dealerships" I can say that working at CarMax was amazing. I didn't get paid on a percentage of price above MSRP or had pressure selling customers on a car that wasn't a fit for them. I loved it.

We purchased our last car from Carvana and it was a great experience. The first car we picked had some issues they found before they delivered it and since there had been a delay, they asked if we wanted to choose a different car and that is what we did. We test drove it before the driver left our house and accepted the delivery. 2 weeks later Carvana sent us a check for just over $300 because we had a 3-week delay in the process due to the first car issues.

This channel has been a life saver! Bought a 2019 Subaru Forester Touring after 2 months of research and learning from #thehomeworkguy and others. Dealer tried to pack on $2, 265 in "accessories"; I was able to negotiate ALL of them off thanks to the advice here! In addition, I negotiated $2, 100 off the car price. Did not tell them anything about a down payment or a trade until we came to an agreement on the car price - that advice to hold that info until the right time was invaluable. Just kept say "I am only interested in the car price at this time" . Once in the finance office, my dad caught an $800 mistake (to my disadvantage) in the purchase contract. They fixed it right away claiming they "didn't know how that happened"; pretty sure they were banking on us not doing the math. The finance guy actually did not push me for the GAP coverage saying I did not need it and also did not push for an extended warranty - shocking! Overall, I will say, this dealer did not devalue my trade and only tried once in negotiating to finagle numbers. I wanted the out the door price at $26, 600, like agreed upon over the phone, they came out with $27, 300 so I informed the salesman that I needed to call my "personal rep/lawyer" for review; once I was on the phone, they came back right away with the correct numbers. Bottom line: you have know your numbers and DO THE MATH until the end. Thanks for all that you do, Homework Guy!

I bought a new car yesterday from a new car dealership, I selected a car from inventory using the internet by window sticker (they also emailed a copy to me) . I got a firm price offer (with discount) by email on that specific car, plus actual TTL. Only then did I go to the dealership for a test drive. As soon as the finance person pulled out the sheet with all the add-on's i told her that I wouldn't be interested in any of them. She started to object and I told her that I understood everything and was not interested. She then turned and printed out the contract for the agreed price, i signed it and gave her a check, she gave me the keys. The whole dealership visit was done in less than a hour and the discount just about covered the TTL charges. I've purchase several cars before but still looked a some of your videos to make sure I wasn't missing anything, keep up the good work, I'm sure you are help a lot of people.

Be careful with Carvana. In 2017, I bought a 2016 Corvette from them with only 2100 miles and it had a voided manufacturer warranty. Luckily I found out within the trial period and they gave me a full refund. There is a video about it on my channel if you want the full story.

"Carvana will refund purchase price minus delivery fee" Translated: You rented a for a high price for a few days! Downside to Carvana not mentioned: You have to get financing on a car you have not seen, get insurance as well. You find it is not the car for you. Congratulations! You get to do it all over again!

As a former car salesperson, I'll do ANYTHING to avoid setting foot in a regular dealer, playing their deceptive, demeaning games. I cannot submit to dealer humiliation.

One thing to watch out for online (it happened to me on Vroom) is inaccurate product listing. Some cars, like Hyundai, don't outright slap a trim label on their vehicles. After looking at the pictures I determined their vehicle was not a top end Limited trim as listed. It was the mid tier SEL trim. Around $4000 difference on the MSRP. I called them out and they said they didn't think so, researched it and informed me the next day I was correct. They offered nothing to remedy this. I wonder how many cars get sold like this. The contract of course guarantees nothing--it is buyer's responsibility to confirm at delivery.

Shopped last month on a new truck. One dealer had a truck that we want for a great price but after talking to the salesman, he said the price wasn’t negotiable, even told us that at f&i dept we don’t have to purchase all their offering and they have the lowest doc fee. Went to another dealer where we negotiated on a similar truck and ended up way way less than the previous dealer using kevin’s technique and f&i guy didn’t get any additional fees to add! So don’t always assumed the lowest price is already the cheapest, use “the homework guy” tips and tricks and super high intensity training! 👍

I think your tips are usually very helpful. However after viewing this video I began reading many customer reviews regarding Vroom. I read nightmare after nightmare and the kicker is that BBB just assigned Vroom an F rating. Have you put out a video addressing this issue? If not would you please do so.
