Battle of Iwo Jima

#OTD in 1945, more than 60,000 Marines and Sailors of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions landed on Iwo Jima, a volcanic island in the Pacific, after three days of naval and air bombardment.

Awaiting them on the eight square miles of sand and rock were 21,000 Japanese defenders, dug into reinforced caves and bunkers. Over the course of the next five weeks, U.S. forces would sustain more than 27,000 casualties and performed such acts of gallantry that 27 Marines and Sailors received the Medal of Honor.

The capture of Mount Suribachi, the highest point of the island, on Feb. 23, 1945, produced one of the most memorable and significant images of the Second World War, and in the history of the Marine Corps. Associated Press photographer and honorary Marine Joe Rosenthal won the Pulitzer Prize for his famous image of six Marines of the 5th Marine Division raising the national ensign.

My Great Grandfather fought in the battle of IwoJima as a Marine, getting the purple heart for getting a shrapnel to the leg. He died in 2004 due to natural causes, may he rest in peace. He’s inspired me to join the Military and when I turn 18 I’m joining the Army.

No marines in my family were at the Battle of Iwo Jima though one Navy relative was apart of the island’s bombardment on the USS Missouri, though my Great Granduncle a Marine (Peleliu and Okinawa) would talk about some of the friends he lost at this battle. May they all Rest In Peace Semper Fi

My father served on Iwo Jima during the Pacific Campaign, after the US Marines captured the first airfield. Dad was in the US Army Air Force as a P-47 Thunderbolt flightline engineer and mechanic.

My grandfather was with 4th Marine division and was on the 2nd wave where he paid the ultimate sacrifice. I one day plan to go to that island and walk in his foot steps and place my own dog tags from my time in the Corps on Mt Sheribachi

Very true President Reagan. The words spoken by you is so well stated. The history of Iwo Jima was quite a hardship for all who were there. I celebrate and thank all of our servicemen and women for what they have done to allow us to keep what we have.
Our Freedom.
Our Right Of Free Speech.
Our right to bear arms.
Our freedom to worship.
Our freedom to choose what we would like to do, not what someone else decides what we are to do.
We are ever so grateful for all who have served our country, risking all, for us.
So many paid the ultimate sacrifice for ALL of us, The Citizens Of The United States Of America.
You are thought of every day, for what you did for us.
Thank you so much for your bravery, your devotion and love for our country. For this love you have given us, we are so fortunate to say, thank you all so much. You are loved.
