Reminds me of that South Park where the town first loves Wall-Mart, loves the convenience, loves the low prices... Then all the local businesses dry up, stuff happens, they self-destruct the Wall-Mart and agree to never let it happen again and ALL shop at Jim's Drugs... Which then grows into a super chain, which they then burn down and agree to ALL shop at True Value...

This episode is from 2004, when "big tech" was still in infancy. People are fickle and gladly give away their money, liberty, whatever is asked of them in order to acquire convenience. It's cyclical because people NEVER change.

Step 2. Once you've reach as many people as you can, coerce with your competitors. Create fake competition and monopolize the market.

Small Clarification. IBM didn't buy MS-DOS, they bought PC-DOS. Very similar but not exactly the same.

@3:00 you forgot about Amazon's advantage of "not having to pay sales tax" for several years after launch. Automatic 5-7% advantage over competitors that most people too-conveniently conflate with "innovation". If Amazon's brick-and-mortar competitors had also sold books without paying tax, their owners would have been sent to prison for fraud.
