Is This Shoe So Good It's Cheating?

This shoe was almost BANNED from the Olympics because it helped runners go too fast! It’s called a “supershoe” and here’s why they’re so good...

Before “supershoes,” a good “energy return” rate was 60-65%. Now? More like 80%. WAY more of the runner’s energy that they get to reuse. These new super shoes helped runners CRUSH world records and people complained the shoes gave them an “unfair advantage”. In the end, regulators decided not to ban the shoes, just add a few limits to the design, but it’s part of a huge debate in sports about “TECH DOPING” - what tech is TOO GOOD? And what simply makes humans better?

There's a reason why the original Olympics were done in the nude. No tech doping there.

I'm pro technology but only if athletes get equal access- if one athlete gets the tech boost, but another who can't afford it loses by seconds or whatever metric then it's an issue because would the athlete win without it?

Instead of banning the shoes the Olympics should just provide them to everyone. Faster runners are more exciting. If everyone is on a even playing field it's fair.

If the technology is available to everyone, than I wouldn't consider it cheating.
Same goes for the "shark suit" Michael Phelps used.

just have every competitor wear the same "super" shoes so they can all compete on equal footing. You're still gonna have the same guy winning, though the record might be higher now

Olympians back in the 19th and 20th century wore spike tracks for running. Almost no cushioning with metal spikes in the bottom. People even ran barefoot. Just imagine 😂

Tech doping removes the excitement of people being better than those before. It's impressive when you break a record because of your efforts, not because you had better gear. Otherwise the previous Olympians record should be held as undefeated.

I think the supershoes should be allowed in competition if the non-pro/elite runners can also reasonable afford the shoes.

The Turkish sharpshooter would just run on flip flops and call everyone complaining about this a coward 😂

You know who didn't have a problem with "tech doping"? The original Greeks. We need to go back to the Olympics the way they did it: everyone competes naked.

There should be separate Olympics only for tech supported sports.

Olympics is evolving, but in reverse.

As long as the tech is accessible to everyone, then fine. In cases like the swimsuit that was banned though it makes sense. They were extremely expensive, difficult to acquire, and were limited to being used only a few times before needing replacement. If these shoes were mostly affordable and could be used by anyone, then its just the next evolution in the sport

You Shorts are fantastically constructed. I watched the long-form says ago, and must say this feels as though it hit on at least 50% of everything you mentioned there. I'm not sure if it'll get people to watch the longer video, but it'll most definitely get them to subscribe. Awesome job!

It’s like using a pole in high jumping, the height still comes from you, but you’re helped by advanced technology
