Well, when i was 4, my dad bought a trusty XBox. you know, the first, ruggedy, blocky one from 2001. we had tons and tons and tons of fun playing all kinds of games together - until he died, when i was just 6.

i couldnt touch that console for 10 years.

but once i did, i noticed something.

we used to play a racing game, Rally Sports Challenge. actually pretty awesome for the time it came.

and once i started meddling around... i found a GHOST.

literaly.

you know, when a time race happens, that the fastest lap so far gets recorded as a ghost driver? yep, you guessed it - his ghost still rolls around the track today.

and so i played and played, and played, untill i was almost able to beat the ghost. until one day i got ahead of it, i surpassed it, and...~

i stopped right in front of the finish line, just to ensure i wouldnt delete it.
Bliss.

I was playing Postal 2. I chopped off a cops arms and legs with some hedge trimmers. Attempting to crawl with her limbless body I pissed on her and set her on fire. I laughed maniacally the whole time. That is when I realized something about myself. I was going to go to hell.

Reading a tumblr I found 00WARTHERAPY00's comments, and it touched the deepest feelings of me... I'm 35 yo, and my son is 6. We used to play video games before sleep (Casttle Crashers), but unfurtunally now we are thousand of miles distanced. I have all the music in my phone, and everytime I hear it I dream about next time we will be together playing again. All my respects to you, and thanks for shearing that experience with us

so touching and I'm full of respect to this guy, as I can feel he loves his dad just as much as his dad loves him, uncountable!

That game company's "Journey" gave me a completely different view on what life and death is. I have never been in that kind of awe before when playing a game and while I've played a lot of brilliant, amazingly beautiful games before and after "Journey". There was just something about that experience that I can't replicate. I don't know if it was spiritual, but it touched me deeply.

NieR:Automata gave me a spiritual experience when I played it for the first time. That game was extremely emotional for me, to the point where I was experiencing moments of grief due to just how f*cked up things got in the story. When I got to the very end, and made it to the "final boss" of the game, that whole experience changed me. It showed me the beauty of humanity, and I felt like I gained something very profound while I played it.

Glory to mankind.

I don't see the difference between what people call a "spiritual experience" and what is just a profound emotional experience. I can play a game, read a book, or watch a movie or play that moves me in a profound way and has me feelzing ze emushuns, but it seems like once you add in the reflective existential feeling to it, suddenly the moment becomes "spiritual".
I don't see anything special about "spiritual experiences" in relation to any other kind of emotional experience, probably because I believe that any emotional experience in humans is caused by the biochemistry of the central nervous system. And if you accept that emotions are just neurons and synapses, then you can accept that any old benign thing could give you any sort of experience from the mundane to the profound, depending on how your brain is wired up at the time.
Here's a question for you, then. What are we going to do with the knowledge that video games can cause spiritual experiences?
