"Which Video Games Make You Smarter: Action, Puzzle or Strategy?" sooo.. ? Action, Puzzle or Strategy? I feel that a title like that implies there is an answer but there was non in the video. Of course different types of video games teach you different things.

Even first person shooters require you to lay low behind a tree for a couple of seconds and think what your strategy will be.

After playing Age Of Empires for a short period of time, i can tell I've become smarter.

I noticed that my hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness increased over the last 10 years that I've been playing video games. FPS, MMOs/MMORPGs, various puzzle games (Tetris still owns). I haven't tripped and fallen in years, also can now easily catch things that are falling or being thrown with minimal attention being paid. Clumsy girl no more!

Those researches never take into consideration fighting games, which are some of the most demanding type of games. I really want to see what would be the results if they analyzed two top fighting game players playing a First To 10.

Video games taught me how to read and write, although this was still during the time where in game speech was resorted to text bubbles, I still believe even seemingly normal games can teach kids valuable skills.

Something people tend to forget is that 'play' is not, and never has been, frivolous. There are strong evolutionary reasons we see it so well represented in successful species, it is one of the key elements in growth and survival on par with exercise and socialization. Even when the skills developed in games are not directly applicable, they strengthen your brain, .. kinda like how even though there are few real world applications for tennis it still gives you a good workout.

There is no way I could just choose ONE favourite video game.

As for genres I guess I play action/adventure the most, but enjoy almost everything (RTS, RPG, platform, puzzle, driving, some FPS, simulators...) except sports games. I don't like watching sports in real-life and playing them instead of doing them seems silly to me as well.

I have a question, are the positive impact of video games permanent?
like, if you played an RTS game before but not anymore, will the improvements on your brian stay or will it fade.

2:30 - I wonder if the researchers tried doing the study backwards; testing subjects to sere if they would punish anonymous strangers more or less and then seeing which video game characters they tended to choose.
