My yips were so bad, especially in tournament rounds, that I was ready to quit golf. I heard about left hand low chipping and, since I already putt that way, I gave it a try. A couple of practice chips and it was instant improvement with consistent contact and, most importantly, it's been holding up under pressure. Now I'm able to focus on my target instead of wondering where the chip was going (or not going). I made the switch a couple months ago and from inside 50 yards I won't even think about going back to conventional. I don't care what it looks like, it's actually fun to be a good chipper again and to do it unconventionally.

The yips have literally ruined my golf game. I used to be a single digit handicapper but have lost all confidence in my short game. I’m determined to try everything I can to fixing it.

Thank You! -It is nice to know that we amateurs aren't the only ones who struggle with the game. Yips are brutal and yes, yes, yes Piers demonstrated the thinking that goes into the negative result which is compounded by tension and worsens the problem (Duffing or Smashing it in the forehead!). This is more mental than technique. Simply (ha!) going back to fundamentals with a pre-shot routine and a positive mental attitude and hitting the shot with confidence will give a better result. Keeping the feet closer together and being deliberate, shortening the swing and grip pressure keeps the swing within your center which limits the club face to bottom out at the right place. I recommend to anyone -good or bad, to suck up the pride and take a few lessons; Lessons and coaching have improved my game, but more importantly made it fun again. What I love about your teaching method is keeping it simple and that you guys are real! Keep it up -Love your work.

As a 5 handicapper who’s had the chipping yips for a few years I found this video today, I did 10 minutes in the garden before playing today and I didn’t yip a single chip on the course!! Such a simple fix thank you👏

The chipping yips caused me to quit golf for 9 years. I had such a good short game when I was young. But it got so bad that if I barely missed a green I brought triple bogey plus into play. I went from a 3 to a 13 because it began to destroy my confidence and make me not like playing or practicing. I just started playing again. I still have the yips, but videos like these are hopefully gonna help me be able to enjoy golf again.

Need more transparent videos like this. Piers, it helps to know even professionals struggle with something that should be so simple. I consider myself a terrific ball striker, but get me inside of 60 yards and I’m a hot mess. I need more videos on short game like this. Not “how to be a robot”, but personal relatable golf struggles. Thanks guys!

I love this video. Piers exactly explained the results--and the frustration! I may be the worlds foremost expert on chipping yips, having suffered them for 48 years! At age 21, I was a great chipper, didn't even think about technique. Put my clubs away for the winter in 1971 (South Dakota), came out the next spring, and it was gone. I've tried literally everything since. Was a 2 handicap, now 6 index, so my long game is good. My basic problem, clearly shown from videos, is dipping and scooping. What has worked somewhat: (1) one-handed chipping. Either hand. No problem, no yips. It's putting the hands together that induces the dip. Pride and stubbornness keeps me from just adopting this permanently. (2) left-hand low. Works great with chip and run. However, I still can hit it fat--not a perfect solution. (3) This one is weird. If I look at the hole (like Jordan Spieth putting), I hit the nicest, crisp chips and pitches. Fun to see the ball launch out of the corner of me eye. It takes the "hit" out of the shot. WHAT DOESN'T WORK. (1) Keep the hands ahead. This is the textbook advice. Shaft lean. We know what that causes for folks with chipping yips. (2) Dave Pelz. Have committed to his method three separate times. Too hard to coordinate body turn, and he never addresses the cause of the scooping, except to say the cause is playing the ball forward. Hell, I can scoop a fat shot when the ball is a foot behind me. (3) Stand Utley, Tom Sieckmann. Feels great when clubhead passes hands and ball pops up without divot. But it is so hard to break habit of pulling club through with left hand. I took five lessons from one of the leading short game teachers of professionals, and he basically taught this method. God bless him, but I wasted $750. What I like about this video is that Piers basically says, "you've got to figure it out yourself. Find something that works." I DO like his idea of pulling up with the left side. I've had some success with that on the range--discovered it by accident. Again, great video if for nothing more than knowing there are very good players out there who suffer like I do. Maybe we should start a support group. "My name is John Doe, and today it took me five to get down from 40 yards."

Your honesty in describing having dealt with serious yips as a pro is commendable and quite helpful.
The discussion made me realize that as a higher handicap golfer, there’s no reason to feel shame and embarrassment when even very skilled golfers can experience essentially the same thing as what I’ve gone through. After watching your video I can approach my short game with a different attitude, and the belief that there’s likely technical issues compounded by anxiety rather than it being all in the head! Thank you!

How refreshing to hear that excellent players such as yourself and others in the comments struggle like us amateurs, I’ve struggled for years with yipping chips (I’m single figures) and it can bring you to tears, it’s so embarrassing you don’t try to fix it but you avoid the shot entirely (ie using woods to chip or putting from yards off the green ) because you convince yourself it’s lack of mental strength or bottle.
Thanks for breaking this problem down to technique which I shall now work on, and thank you for being honest about your own weaknesses Piers, I’m more inclined to follow instruction from someone who empathises with how golfers struggle than from a teacher who thinks golf is easy.

Have to say this has revolutionised my short game. Was on the verge of giving up as chipping was so bad over last few years it was destroying any enjoyment I was getting from the game. 2 rounds using this new approach and a couple of hours practising my confidence started coming back and. I am now no longer simply worried about getting the ball somewhere on the green but can focus on getting it near the hole. I really wish I’d been told how to do this 15 years ago! Thanks guys x much in your debt.

Hi Guys
Just want to add my thanks for having the courage to be honest about this. I'm an ex PGA pro returning to golf after a 15 year break...(mortgage and kids😉)...however whilst the basic swing has been relatively easy to find again...the short game is proving slightly more difficult. Keep on with your honest approach...great video. Thanks 👍

Finally, someone who actually addresses the problem of the yips. Great video around understanding the bounce and not advocating the shaft lean methodology. Have been battling with the chipping yips for a while now and ended up chipping with left hand low to get the jittery right hand out of the shot. Sliding the club under the ball rather than trying to clip it precisely. Thanks again - great video!

Thanks for having the COURAGE to post this. Really appreciate your efforts to help! I've struggled with this same issue for many years and I continue to struggle with this aspect of the game. I agree with what starts out as a fundamental execution error can turn into a mental obstacle. I'm a highly coordinated individual and has baffled me why this has been so difficult to fix. I personally really liked the piece you did with Stan Utley a while ago, and I can see how you've incorporated some of that here. I have tried to use that too. As with so much in golf, there is no one "right way" to do something as artistic as the chip/pitch shot. It's important to embrace the process of discovery, and try to enjoy the journey. Wishing you well as you stay curious in trying to improve!!!!

chipping and delicate shots around the green are a nightmare for me right now. My full swing and ball striking is probably on par with tour level golfers, and my chipping has always been decent. But around 3 years ago, my body just seems to freeze up halfway through the shot whenever i chip, and i focus so hard on just making good contact but unable to. The funny thing is, i have no problem chipping, hitting flop shots when I'm just on the practice green and not playing. Honestly, ptsd with chipping has caused confidence issues outside of golf as well and hopefully no one else has to deal with such a terrible experience.

Your best video EVER, at least for me. I’ve had this problem my whole life. I hit my irons and woods decent but my short game is horrific. I watch lots of these instructions but I get tired of hearing the same things from people I don’t believe have really ever suffered similar problems. This is the most human I’ve seen your videos where I feel I can relate to you and you to me. I really appreciate the openness especially from a player of your caliber. I would have never imagined you missing a chip shot completely, would not have even dreamed it was possible. Keep the human side coming and I think you’ll get more subscribers. Truthfully I’ve only watched about 40-50 of your videos and kind of went away maybe because I didn’t feel you could relate to my game. This was great for me.

Piers, I agree with pretty much agree with all you've said, but also with the addition of establishing extremely light grip pressure at address and maintaining it throughout the swing. I also try to blend the motion of the arms and the torso so they both swing and rotate/pivot at the same speed. To view this "blending" of arms and torso, I would recommend watching videos of Luke Donald, Justin Rose, and Tiger Woods... Cheers 😃

Thanks so much. I've struggled with my game around the green for the past few years but never get a chance to practice what with family commitments, just turn up and play and hope that it got better. It didn't, but after watching this vid and putting the tips into practice, it really has changed my game. After only 3 or 4 shots that turned out pretty well, I feel confident standing over a shot with a wedge that I would previously tried to hit with a putter or a hybrid. Of course there are the occasional ones that don't work out perfectly, but that's no different than every other club in the bag. Thanks boys, really appreciate it!

Great video for technique but I'm convinced that the chipping (and putting) yips are actually a mental tick that manifests itself in loss of proper technique, rather than the other way around. My chipping and pitching is actually pretty great on the practice green, but I struggle to take it to the course because the consequences only exist on the course, to the point that I attribute the slight improvement in my chipping yips this season to trying to get myself into the same mindset I have when I'm on the chipping green (i.e. I'm focusing on what type of shot I need to hit/where I want the ball to land, etc.) To me, curing the yips is about the mental approach you take to the shot you need to hit as a whole, rather than narrowing the scope of your focus to technique. -- The example I always use to illustrate this difference is the fact that I am comfortable hitting a flop shot from anywhere around the green so long as the lie is conducive to it, and the reason I am successful is I am not thinking at all about technique, only on how hard I have to swing and where I need to land the ball--so if I miss the green and have a "flop shot" lie, it's better than 50/50 I will get up and down, but if it's not, (the ball is sitting too far down or is on a soft but tight lie) then the mental demons creep in.

I could have used this 3 years ago. I struggled so much and with perseverance have evolved a chip shot that is a blend of the two you demonstrated. My yips are 95% gone but it took 3 years, this vid would have made it 3 weeks. Well done 👏👏

Thanks for sharing this! I went to the putter stroke too to get rid of my chipping yips. I do have a little shaft lean and have been shifting my weight on my left leg. I also have been working on getting the feeling of brushing the surface and depending on the lie, I may have to choke down. I determine this on a couple of practice swings. I use the length of my backswing to control the distance. Since I've made this change for myself, my chips and pitches have been so much more consistent and I can control the distance better.
