Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

7.62 X 51 still alive and kicking in machine guns

It did remain a standard NATO cartridge for quite some time after.

Both are great cartridges. Great just like you Mr Spomer. We’re grateful for you.

It's still being used unofficial when the situation requires it. The 308 like its parent cartridge the 30-06 will always be around in some capacity.

The 308w was developed in 1952 from tests using the .300 savage case. The first rifle to be chambered in this cartidge was the Winchester mod 70 Featherlight.
The .308 Norma Magnum 7.62x65(belted), parent cartridge is the .338 Winchester Magnum.
The .308 Norma Magnum is roughly 100fps behind a .300 win mag at any given weight.
But the shorter case allows you to seat longer bullets better. It nearly obsolete, but a great cartridge I had one built on a 98 action built in the UK by J Manton & Co... synonyms for big game rifle & shotguns

The .308 has the same bullet as a 30-06, A 30-06 has a little more knock down but a.308 is a little more accurate when shooting long shots, My Dad owned a Bolt action Winchester.308 bought it brand new in 1970, And killed many, many Deer, I grew up on Deer meat and fresh water fish , Bass, Bream , shellcracker etc.

And yet, the M14 (7.62×51) is the weapon I qualified in 1989 and is the only rifle I shot while in the Navy 89-95.

You have always had a problem with 308 for some reason. Is it the best no, but it's a great all-around cartridge

In the US military alone: M60, M240, M134, M110, M24, SCAR, Mk14, and Mk48.
And that's not counting all the other battle rifles, sniper rifles, and machine guns from other countries.

Testament to how important weight factors into ability to wage battle and endure. Even the "Blackhawk Down" story highlights a soldier's dilemma whether to carry more water or more ammo.

And yet in 1973 in USMC bootcamp we trained with and qualified with the m-14 and 308.

meanwhile under STANAG 2310 Nato countries rocked on with the L1A1, FN FAL, G3, BM59 for another 30 years almost.
