Questions about morality always make their way to our Q&A sessions. The first thing we ought to know is the difference between epistemology and ontology. Katie is also confused about is morality subjective?

Subjective morality means each person decides for themselves what is moral and what is not. This equates to no morality. Whenever people do "what they feel like doing, " it never ends well.

Here is a great example of morality in different cultures, there was a woman that grew up in an Amazon Tribe and her tribe believed that children who born with disabilities brought a curse on the tribe so they would leave their children if born with a disability in the jungle to be eaten by the animals or left to die alone.
This woman who didn't know any other way and even though it was morally acceptable in here culture, when this woman herself had a child with a disability she knew what would have to happen, even though she didn't want to do it and felt it was wrong.
She left her child in the jungle to die but she was so overcome with guilt and fear for her child that she returned for her child and thank the good Lord she was still alive. The woman knew she would have to leave her family and her tribe because her baby wouldn't be accepted so she choose to leave and now lives in Brazil with her child and has became Christian.
I think this is a perfect example that morality isn't subjective, even if something is acceptable in our culture we still know it's wrong although we may never have known any other way of life, just because the majority of people do something doesn't make it right.

If there is an objective morality, there's no way any human being can know what that is because all each of us has is our own subjective experience of reality. And yet, people all over the world are convinced that their particular belief book - whether it's the Lotus Sutra, the Bhagavad Gita, the Koran, the Bible, etc. - represents THE OBJECTIVE TRUTH of reality. And so their delusion makes them "think, " well, THOSE OTHER PEOPLE just think that their book is the objective truth, but MY BOOK IS THE REAL TRUTH. In other words, human narcissism, delusion and ignorance knows no bounds. And so many people are willing to pull the wool over their own eyes so they can feel safe and secure in this big, mysterious reality.

The closer we move towards perfect dignity and perfect unconditional love, the closer we get to God (who is the source and embodiment of both). Hence, God is the gold standard of moral good.

Nice rationalization frank your explanation shows there is no objective moral standard. Weas humans decided slavery is wrong in direct contravention to what the bible says.

You missed out the part at the end where she says "no, what you're saying makes absolutely no sense".

If anyone wants an expanded view of this issue, look up both "social contract theory" and "instinct theory" of morality to see where they both fail as subjective ideas.

The truth is written on our heart. We are in the image of GOD. It's the little light that GOD put in each and every one of us. The light that lives forever and the same light the father of all lies is trying to snuff out. Stay prayed up to the most high!!

God subjects us to one moral code and he subjects himself to another completely different moral code. So MORALITY IS SUBJECTIVE UNDER CHRISTIANITY!!!!

So many people conflate morality changing with people's or society's subjective beliefs changing. Frank is absolutely right on this point. We have to have a standard outside ourselves to which we can judge right and wrong. Otherwise there's only subjectivism which is a bankrupt philosophy and un-liveable reality.

Exodus 21:20–21 says, “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.”

She asks some very good questions. I'm glad frank was able to answer it for her though I wish they had more time. It looked like she may not have understood his lat point.

Morality is subjective at the end of the day. You’ve got objective or societal morality; but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good or bad. Good and bad lay in the perspective one choses to view said actions in. You can’t know for sure what is right or wrong, you can only know the perspective in which you chose to view something in.

If the morality of slavery being wrong is unchanging, why does the Bible not directly condemn it?

Thank you Dr. Turek. You have a great ministry and a fantastic way of explaining complicated subjects. I am now rereading Stealing From God. Thank you again.
