Why This New EV Battery Could End Gas Forever

CATL is a battery company responsible for many EV batteries across the entire globe for several companies including Tesla, Ford, BMW, and more. CATL is well-known for their leading innovation in Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries which are so good that Tesla uses them in some variants of the Model 3 & Model Y.

LFP batteries have better thermal stability and can tolerate higher temperatures without significant degradation with a lower risk of fire. LFP batteries can be charged to 100% state-of-charge daily, and they typically have a longer life span and can withstand a larger number of charge-discharge cycles before experiencing significant degradation. LFP batteries tend to have a lower environmental impact in terms of resource mining since they do not contain cobalt and nickel.

Given these advantages, LFP batteries will play a huge part in the world’s transition to electric vehicles, and CATL has demonstrated its expertise this field with the introduction of their new Shenxing Plus battery: the world’s 1st LFP battery capable of 4C super-fast charging, an achievement that will revolutionize the EV industry.

CATL's journey to the Shenxing Plus battery began with the original Shenxing battery introduced in 2023 which was designed to support a super-fast 4C charge rate. C-rate is the unit used to measure the speed at which a battery is fully charged or discharged. Charging at a C-rate of 1C theoretically means the battery is charged from 0-100% in 1 hour. The Shenxing Plus battery not only regain 600 kilometers (~370 miles) of range in just 10 minutes of charging, but it has a range of 1,000 kilometers (~620 miles).

This not only matches the performance of batteries using nickel and cobalt chemistry, but the Shenxing Plus battery can charge at a rate of one kilometer per second. Imagine an electric car with 600+ miles of range that can regain 300+ miles of range in 10 minutes? I’d love for the new Tesla Roadster to have these specs, but LFP batteries are cheaper to produce so these batteries could very well make their way into many other more affordable EVs. We Tesla owners are excited to see what batteries are in the upcoming Model Y Juniper refresh and also the most anticipated Tesla of all time: the $25,000 compact vehicle.

CATL introduced a fast lithium-ion conductive coating to enhance ion transfer, integrated transition metal elements to boost performance, and implemented a nano-layer encapsulation technique for efficient energy transfer between the cathode and anode materials. CATL also addressed the challenge of heat management during high-speed charging by expanding the overcurrent area and increasing terminal capacity, ensuring safety and stability.

Quite possibly the most impressive part of the Shenxing Plus battery is the milestone in energy density (amount of energy a battery can store within a given weight). The higher the energy density, the more energy a battery can store while keeping the same weight. This is a crucial factor that determines how much power (and for how long) an EV battery can produce and thus, how long an EV’s range is. High energy density is important to minimize the total weight of the battery while storing as much energy as possible to maximize the car’s range.

The Shenxing Plus battery pack design incorporates cutting-edge features such as module-free CTP 3.0 technology and a granular gradation technique for the cathode material. The Shenxing Plus battery aims to be the answer to the longstanding trade-off between driving range and charging speed by providing both a substantial driving range along with a rapid charging capability in a single battery solution that is hopefully reasonably priced.

This advancement is crucial not only for consumer convenience and adoption but also for the broader EV market's evolution. CATL's Shenxing Plus battery is a huge milestone in EV battery technology, addressing key concerns of range anxiety and charging times while setting new standards for performance and efficiency. If this battery eliminates the fear of EVs being too expensive along with ending the fear of long charging times or fear of running out of battery on a trip, then there will be no more excuses left for anyone to buy a gas car over an electric car.

What I want is CATL making available this battery to the public so we can upgrade our older EVs

Faster non-degrading charging is the key factor.

Wake me up when it actually exists and cost less than $30k

I want a replacement battery for my 2014 Nissan Leaf with this tech.

If this was in the Aptera, that would mean about 900 miles of range in 10 minutes 🔥

Average gas tank is 15 gallons. Average mileage is 25 miles per gallon. Average range under ideal conditions then is 375 miles. This means there are a lot of EVs that go farther than a lot of ice cars already. If you charge at home then there are a lot of EVs that have a lot more range than a lot of ice vehicles on any given morning.

I said long time ago, its both. Longer range means a fewer charging stops in between, charging speed means more stalls for others, simple.

It seems that every week you can find new battery technology videos and every one of them brags on how great each of them are and promises they are coming soon.

I am holding out purchasing a second EV based on range. 500 miles on a single charge is a no brainer.

Over 90% of the road trips I've ever been on when I'm with another person, have all taken way longer than 10 minutes! If I'm ever on a road trip with a group, then 30+ minutes is the norm! Also, over 90% of my road trips in my Model 3, the car is done with the charge before we get back to the vehicle! (I always target each charge to add back 2 hours of driving time or less.)

This is BS. In most parts of the world EV sales have ground to a halt. In the UK they can't give the things away. There is nothing like sufficient capacity on the grid nor enough charging points. Yet we are supposed to have 80% EV sales here by 2030! Not going to happen.

EVs make up 7.6% of cars sold. I'm no mathematician, but the idea that fossil fuels are going somewhere is absolutely ridiculous.

Gas is a dead man walking...completely irrespective of whether we get better batteries (which we inevitably will). I just watched a video about a 430, 000 mile Model S with its original battery and still had 77% of its original range. And Tesla batteries already recharge 150-175 miles in about the time it takes to buy a bottle of water or visit the restroom.

One word "graphene" this could be the ultimate battery for electric vehicles🎉

Where the hell is all the unlimited zero emission electricity and the grid to deliver it? 65% of the energy generated to charge an electric car is lost as heat in the distribution system. You are starting at 35% efficiency. Perfection of the car is irrelevant.

In the UK anyway and excluding Tesla it has to be range, 100% so, and for two good reasons.
The 1st and most important is try to find a working charger that hasn't got a 1 to 3hr wait, doesn't matter if you can charge in a few minutes if you have to wait to do it.
The 2nd is, when i charge at home it's either free (off my solar panels) or 7p a kwh from my octopus EV plan, Not 90p a kwh from an elusive public charger, and if you have just spent 10 to 30k more buying an electric car you don't want to be spending twice as much filling it up as you would a petrol vehicle.

This is just an unadulterated advertising video for CATL battery technology. As consumers can't buy direct, it has no value.

There is NO WAY that the Tesla Roadster would ship with an LFP chemistry. That would be outrageous.
