I’m searching YouTube to find out EV battery questions I have, found and watched this. – You say that EV batteries can last 10 to 20 years and since most people sell their car before then the question of battery life is moot. I don’t get it. How does that make it moot? Who would buy a used 10-year-old car knowing the first thing you have to do is spend $7500 on a new battery? If the car were yours, how do you find someone to sell it to who has a realistic budget based life? You would have to in effect give them like $5000 just to take it from you. The very expensive EV battery replacement doesn’t go away if you just buy a new car. Or is the idea that EV cars are meant to be disposable? But that in aggregate cannot be good for the environment! – My questions are all occasioned by my friend loaning me her seven year old Nissan Leaf right now when she’s away on vacation for a month. (She thought it would be fun for me to get to try out an EV vehicle. I myself own a beautiful 2002 BMW 325xi which I love and daily drive.) I am stunned to learn driving this Leaf around that the battery in this car is so degraded that its maximum range is 67 miles! It’s like owning a horse! You have to organize your day around trying to figure out when you’re going to feed it half a bale of hay! And where are you even going to find that half a bale of hay! Many of the charging stations I go to already have a line of cars waiting pathetically with their plug in covers left open hoping some Good Samaritan will come plug it in while they are taken care of other things! What am I not understanding about EV vehicles?

Why do you say when a battery gets under 70% you need to let it go? I sold my first EV, a 2013 leaf, with 100k on it in 2020 at 67% original state of charge / battery health. Since then the guy that bought it has put another 50k miles on the car.

When I took my 2019 Chevy Bolt EV to the dealer for battery replacement as part of GM's recall, I asked the dealer to measure my old battery degradation. It turned out that, after 3.5 years of active everyday driving (including 3 Canadian winters), my old battery's degradation was about 2%. Which means that the battery is highly likely to outlive the car.

Recently, I read about a German guy who had driven his Tesla for over 1, 000, 000 km and his car was still going strong. I, for one, believe him. EVs are made to last. One of the best investments I've ever made.

Nissan Leaf is an exception because it's battery is not thermally managed. It will be fine if you don't stress it too much with long road trips with quick charging.

For the majority of EV owners, if you use and charge your car properly, the battery will easily outlast the car

It costs more than. $7000 to replace the ev battery

It could last as little as 10 miles or 15 minutes if you are unfortunate enough to accidentally damage it by, for example driving over some debris. When damaged in this way, it won`t be covered by warranty so car would be an economic write off. What a thought.

"...newer batteries will do far better..., " unless manufacturers bank on battery replacements for a source of profit. Batteries are prime targets for planned obsolescence, unless competition and/or tight regulation makes this infeasible.

I got my ev car because I got tired of working on cars all the time, plus I worked part time at an auto parts store and hearing people come in talking about their regular car and parts I never heard of bothers me because having to spend $30, 000 on a gas car and still having to change the oil every 6 months, spark plugs, put gas at nearly $3.70 a gallon every week, plus after a few years the starter, alternator, ignition coils go bad, and much more…the cost of buying an electric car undercut the cost from owning a gas car. Also the convenience of charging it at home at your own time is a piece of mind

How much does the asset depreciate after 6 years if the capacity is now 65%, about the same as if the car was in an accident, you will need to deeply discount the sale of the asset to unload it, due to the liability of battery replacement.

Given the cost of battery replacement and vehicle deappreciaon, expect electric vehicle to be mechanically totalled between 3 to 5 years from new.

replacing a battery on a Hundai EV car will cost you $55000 Canadian . But putting a new 2.7lt Ecoboost motor in a F-150 will cost you under $20, 000 with labour and taxes . and that motor with good care will get as much as 400, 000 KM .

Don't think batteries will last more than say 5-8 year on average in harsher climates and that with declining range and so used EV will be commut-cars only and have a significantly shorter life-span than a ICE car. And expensive at that.
