This was the most coherent microlecture on the relative benefits and risks of plant protein vs animal products I've heard yet. I'll be sharing as widely as I can.

Great to know. You can get things like TVP or TSP at stores and make your own plant based burgers/meats. That's what I do but I leave out all the extra fat. I've been trying to perfect my fat-free alternative meats since so many of the recipes call for a ton of oils to make the 'meat' taste good!

Wow, this is the first time in all these years watching these videos that I can say my mind is blown. I honestly did not expect this outcome.

Interestingly, the researchers concluded, that they did not find a significant difference between protein isolate products and whole food sources, “suggesting that the cholesterol-lowering effects are at least, in part, attributable to the plant protein itself rather than just the associated nutrients.” So, it’s not just because plant protein travels with fiber or less saturated fat. Plant proteins break down into a different distribution of amino acids; and so, it’s like if you give people arginine, an amino acid found more in plant foods, that alone can bring down people’s cholesterol. And even plant protein concentrates used in these products aren’t pure protein, retaining a few active compounds such as phytosterols and antioxidants, which also can have beneficial effects.

Soy protein isolate is a potent cortisol suppressor. Not something you want to eat too much of if you have an inflammatory disorder.

Thank you for this information. I have often wondered about isolated plant protein and its health effects or benefits.

What about metal contamination and the fact that they use many agrochemicals to cultivate it?.

When it comes to just me, I don't like to eat these replacement products any more, I'm all in on whole foods. But they help me to slowly nudge family members into a vegan diet. Good to have some knowledge to back it up!

You thaught me too well Dr Greger. When i saw the title i immediately said "it depends to what it's compared to" without thinkin too much. If course there are healthier foods but if you want that taste and feeling it's hard to go for something else.

I was ready to quit the plant based diet until I found beyond meat. That stuff is delicious!

As an occasional consumer soy protein isolates, I am concerned about their manufacturing process - the extraction of fat from soy beans is commonly done with a toxic solvent called hexane, which I would not be excited to consume. It would be great to have an analysis on that. E.g., would hexane be healthier than organic eggs or dairy?

So, how healthy is vegan protein powder consumption?
Do you reccomend it, or we should be extra aware of its protein sources?
Thank you Dr Greger!

Getting strong Jeff Goldblum vibes but great video. I wonder if quorn protein has the same effect as other plant protein sources since it's exracted from fungus?
