To use SSH, you have to go in and set up each program individually to use it, meaning you have to go change the proxy settings for each program you want encrypted. Even though the initial set up for a VPN is a lot, a VPN encrypts all of your traffic and you don't have to worry about if a program is set up to use it or not. So overall there's more "messing about" with SSH than VPN.

It will. It depends on how many users you have using the VPN and what they are doing. I personally do not like running a VPN server through windows. I ignored setting one up until I built a pfsense router. These routers are EXTREMELY powerful once you set them up and they allow for an easy way to make an OpenVPN server with them.

Great, I got my server all set up just in time for college. I don't want any admins watching what I'm doing online.

rewind a few seconds before that, that is the client-side VPN information necessary for the client computer to connect to the host VPN.

This is why I use Linux... Setting up a VPN using SSH tunnels is easier as all the tools are built in, and not surprisingly, easier to use. If you are looking for VPN and SSH connections, might as well go to Linux as you have to sue command line in windows anyway (which is what everyone tries to avoid by not using Linux).

Yep! If you can get OpenVPN installed and connected, then you can use it as a proxy!

If you have access to a VPN from a university, you could also just use that instead of setting up a server. If you're in college, browse around the IT department pages of your college's website and see if they provide access to a VPN (mine does).

If you route your traffic through the VPN yes you can get around blocked websites.

Hi gigafide, I really liked your video on "The Art of Phishing". On the same note, I watched this video, and now would like to know how less reputable hackers can see my information when it is going from my computer to a server (and back) over the internet cloud. Thanks in beforehand and keep up the excellent work mate!

you don't need SOCKS with VPN because it encrypts ALL your traffic no matter what program you're using. You only need SOCKS with things like SSH tunneling, which requires you to set up each specific program to use it.

Tor is fine until your Sys admin blocks all outbound ports...save for 80 and 443. I imagine you could set it to use those ports, however, routing your traffic through a random server in Norway or Lithuania is painfully slow and a great way to have your account info compromised.
