My fix is get my cut off tool out and remove the locking tab part

I always knew there was a special trick, thanks for showing us how. Too bad those are hard to find in the aftermarket, I think they work better than worm style clamps.

Reason GM (and all other manufacturers) has these is the radiator is plastic and if you use a 'standard worm drive' clamp it will leak as the plastic contracts/expands due to heat. If you use a HIGH quality worm drive they may not but you risk over tightening and deforming the plastic. In the past radiators were COPPER/BRASS and the worm drive worked. On motorcycles (Yamaha/Kawasaki/Suzuki ect - have a different type of clamp and radiators are aluminum on the aluminum water pump cover and they don't leak).

Most mechanics hate those clamps. I love em! I honestly don’t know how tight to put the screw type clamps so I’d much rather something that just fits!

How would you do this if the clamp is facing away from you and it’s tucked up against a surface that you can’t remove? It’s on my Dodge Dart…

You can also smack the end that has the tab with your pliers, usually pops em shut

How do you do that on a DD15 when it down in the dirver side frame rail with not enough room to get any tools too it.

I still have leaks from the clamps is there anything I should put like rtv before locking the clamps?

What about the reverse man I can't squeeze because the tabs are facing on inside of the car how can I squeeze the opposite direction

Great instructions. Those clamps are a pain in the ass to get unlocked. Can you imagine needing to change a hose in the field without special pliers? My Heater hose broke off at the plastic connector at firewall... Finished job, and have check engine light on. Will have to figure that out... 🙃

Wait.. so THIS is why they SNAP the plastic lip off the radiator lol isn’t it better to gently unload the spring? Aluminum? Fine.. plastic? Brittle? Nah

Much thanks! Great tip. I was scratching my head on how to release it. Turns out a very well designed clamp. I am sure it saves them time on the assembly line.
