The reason was shown in the anime it was because they knew the existence of the founding titian and zeke desire to combine which would pose a major threat to the marleians. It is implied when reiner wakes up from the hospital after the battle with eren in marley. This is also why you saw zeke allying eren to fight the marleyens in paradise. Though it is interesting why zeke and eren hatched this plan without zeke telling his allies about this because they share the same goal of eliminate the eldian race. I would say you're partially not wrong because in the anime they do talk about returning to paradise to obtain the founding titain in order to make marley stronger, but the catalyst was the threat of zeke and eren combining.

I wonder if there is a universe where Isiyama went for an optimistic ending similar to Avatar? Where the Scouts traveled the world, befriending all sorts of people & getting them to let go of the past, all culminating in a final battle against the Tybur family & either still getting rid of the Power of the Titans, or Eren finding a way to use it to benefit humanity as a whole.
