My best friend's father made his cadet cruise aboard the Pueyrredon in her last year of service. He told us once that when they were near Gibraltar, there was a carrier task group of the 6th Fleet in the process of crossing the straits too. Because the Pueyrredon was a lone ship, the USN commander, as a courtesy ceded the priority to pass through the strait. What he didn't know was that the old cruiser had the machinery in such a bad shape that she barely could do 2 or 3 knots and the passage took her several hours in which the entire carrier group was forced to sail in circles waiting.
He told us that the when they reached Rotterdam the ship's engines broke for a final time and the Navy was forced to rush a transport from Argentina to get the cadet's cruise completed.

It's such a diverse, and experimental era, but not in a clunky way like the iron-clad era.
