Prince Phillip was a fantastic bloke. He had a mouth on him that sometimes led to criticism, but I believe that when he said something inappropriate it was usually in the spirit of trying to be friendly and funny. He simply didn't have a great feel for what might seem offensive.
Nobody can fault his ability as a husband within the most difficult marriage situation in the world. Elizabeth is a good woman but marrying the Queen is always going to be difficult.
For his service to the Royal Navy, Phillip deserves massive respect. Good night sweet Prince and may flights of Angels speed thee to thy rest.

You know, I have had this odd obsession with HMS Black Prince ever since I read in a book that had a brief section that detailed a possible encounter that the destroyer HMS Spitfire had with HMS Black Prince during the night action of the Battle of Jutland. After being badly damaged following a close range engagement with the German Battleship SMS Nassau (which included the two ships colliding), HMS Spitfire was nearly run down by what the captain described as a German Battlecruiser with two widely spaced funnels that was "...a mass of fire from foremast to mainmast, on deck and between decks. Flames were issuing out of her from every corner." The mysterious ship passed by silently and disappeared into the night before exploding some time around midnight. It is theorized that this unknown German Battlecruiser may have been HMS Black Prince with her two middle funnels having either been shot away or collapsed and the timing of this sighting roughly coincides with the German account of HMS Black Prince's sinking which was engaged and sunk shortly after midnight.
