You bring hope to all Low-GPA applicants

Thank you for being so honest and open because I've seen too many posts with "Low GPA" then they have above a 3.5 which was disheartening.

I had a similar story. Got a lot of B/Cs in science course, my since GPA was probably 3.2 which is not horrible but is pretty bad when you are applying for med school as an Asian applicant. My MCAT score at the time was decent, but it wasn't all that great. I was on the 15 pt scale for each section and got like a 31. It definitely wasn't high enough to save my GPA. I applied the first time, also late and was waitlisted at 2 places. The second time I applied and got into the school I wanted to go to. I did not take a post-bac program. Instead, I focused on every other aspect of my application. I did a lot of volunteering, clinical shadowing, research + publications, and medical mission trips. I think because of what I had done, I stood out extracurricular wise from my fellow applicants. This also made my interviews very easy as I had a lot I could talk and share about. I was never a person that was great at test-taking, but I was able to get into medical school and have passed all my boards so far. Good luck to those applying to medical school. My two pieces of advice is to make sure this is what you want to do before you commit and make sure you have a life outside of studying and school.

Great video. I think three things really set you apart:
1. You have a great personality, which comes across in your PS and undoubtedly came across in your interviews:
2. You wrote a great application; and
3. Your EMT experience demonstrates your commitment to healthcare.

I took a gap year and unfortunately applied late (sent out my first secondary in September). I wanted to get a job to build more experiences, but I literally got rejected from every single job or didn’t hear anything back but on the flip side I just got accepted into my first MD school! Watched this video right before the acceptance email came in and it made me optimistic. Loved it!

It’s crazy how a difference of 7 points on the MCAT can bring you from 68th percentile to 94th percentile. The 20 points between 508 and 528 really make or break a lot of students. Each point is a hurdle to overcome.

Applied for Med School after my first year at University and didn't get in, so I decided to do a BSc in Anatomy. I finished my last paper in Jan this year and now I'm three weeks into Med School:) You can do this! Never give up!

I cannot thank you enough for this video. I’m a pre-med junior in college and I’ve been in such a slump all day because I have my first physics exam tomorrow and the professor is notoriously bad about making exams impossible. Your calm demeanor and success despite making a few Bs and Cs here and there has calmed me down so much! Thank you!

I'm 23 (turning 24 this year) and will be applying for a 2nd time after scribing in the ER for a year and honestly this makes me feel so much better knowing that there will be other people my age and older who also took some time off from undergrad. Thank you so much for sharing your journey !!

dont get fooled, you either have a high GPA or a high MCAT and often times a high MCAT holds more weight

This video is great motivation. I was a EMT as well prior and didn’t have a good college gpa. I then joined the military and work as a clinical lab tech while taking college courses and shadowing other providers around the hospital. I think everyone takes different routes to reach the same goals!

I was a little bit overwhelmed by the title of the video, but I'm glad I watched it. It was reassuring to hear you applied again, three years later! thank you so much for sharing your experience :) it gives me a lot of hope as a non-trad!! Congrats on getting into medical school!!!

Really appreciate how open you are to even show your AMCAS application. You always hear about people saying they had low or high GPAs/MCATs but they never show. Thanks for sharing and Congratulations

I recently got accepted as well and have some advice for anyone applying. So, I was a high GPA (3.805) and a little above average MCAT (508). For extracurriculars my major things were virtual shadowing and I volunteered with the crisis text line. I also had hobbies and had done theatre in high school. I’m mentioning this because we were practically opposite applicants and I notably got into my ideal school and then was rejected or waitlisted by everyone else. It’s also worth noting that I didn’t get in till I sent an update letter to all the schools about me being employed as an Ophthalmic Technician. So, I would argue that experience is really the most important part of an application and if you just got rejected and need another year my biggest suggestion is work as an EMT, scribe, or medical assistant. Then throw in some volunteering with something you’re passionate about and that oftentimes should be enough. Other suggestions are if your GPA is solidly at or below 3.2 you can always consider a masters or PhD program. The best part is that those degrees will even help with residency and fellowship applications. I’ve looked into this a good bit so if anyone has any questions I’d be willing to help.
