Medical School Application Explained

If you want to become a doctor, you have to go to medical school. And to get into medical school in the United States, you must follow a standardized application process, which has several nuances you should know about.

Getting into medical school in the United States is a competitive ordeal, with approximately 53,000 students applying each year for 22,000 seats. That means the acceptance rate is roughly 41%. Matriculants also have an average GPA of 3.73 and MCAT of 511.5, which is the 83rd percentile.

The Primary Application to medical school is done through either AMCAS, AACOMAS, or TMDSAS, depending on whether you're applying to MD (allopathic) or DO (osteopathic) medical schools, and whether you're applying to Texas medical schools.

Secondary applications are sent about a month later, and unlike the primary application, are specific to each school. If the medical school is impressed by your primary and secondary applications, then you'll be invited to an interview. Interviews can be traditional, multiple mini interview (MMI), or panel.

Finally, the medical school will give you a decision, being acceptance, rejection, or waitlist.

Here in India we have 1.4 million students competing for 42000 seats through a nation wide medical entrance exam. I'm one of them this year.

As a first year pre-med, this is such valuable information to know

I already know all of this but I keep watching these videos in hopes that the reality of how close next year's application cycle is will hit me and kick me into overdrive with MCAT studying.

Skipped last cycle bc of burnout from mcat prep, but this video definitely made me feel more confident about the whole process

I would like to add a 4th interview type that I have encountered a couple times this cycle: completely virtual. There are some schools that have adopted a virtual interview format without an interviewer present. You are granted access to a portal where questions will show up on the screen and your response is recorded. Not my favorite interview style, but you do get to do it on your own time.

Great video. I was unwise and applied in late October to medical school because I didn’t understand the process well. It still worked out and I got into my top MD school I wanted to go to but I would echo Kevin’s advice and encourage any applicants to apply in June as soon as you can!

It's fascinating to see the US system! 😊 Many similarities compared to UK - importance of an engaging personal statement, entrance exam, and finally the interview (panel or MMI) where you have to display your passion and research into the profession. In the UK, we have a unified system (UCAS) for university applications. But wherever you are, preparation is key - every step is important!! Good luck to all 🙌😊💯

Hey Med School Insiders... do you guys think you can have a video for students that want to get into med school but has close to zero academic experience, just barely graduated high school and chased a different career path? I personally went back to Korea to do my army service for 2 years, came back and i still didn't know what i wanted to do. So I'd been working odd jobs until the pandemic hit and a lot of things happened in my life, and I decided i'm going to be a doctor. Not that i "want to" or i "need to", i'm going to. I know it's gonna be hard especially since I had barely studied back in high school and it's been 7 years since then, but i'm determined to take the first step and not give up. Please help!

Sir, kindly consider making a dedicated video for international medical graduates to get into US medical system.
I'm currently doing 2nd year at medschool in India and aspire to serve and practice in the United States. Please explain the various steps to get residency in US hospitals.

What a long process. In Italy you only have to take one test. The only setback is that It Is very selective
