What It Takes To Survive Navy RDC School — Where Boot Camp Instructors Train | Boot Camp

Recruit division commanders, known as RDCs, are the drill sergeants of the United States Navy. Before they train Navy recruits at boot camp, future RDCs must graduate from Continuation School, or C School, at Naval Station Great Lakes near Waukegan, Illinois, about 40 miles north of Chicago.

Business Insider spent four days at RDC C School to see how recruit division commanders are trained to instruct the next generation of sailors.

RDCs distinguish themselves from other Navy personnel with a red rope they wear around the left shoulder of their uniforms. They're responsible for training and mentoring Navy recruits during their time in boot camp.

During the 13-week C School course, RDC students learn how to motivate recruits, inspect their barracks, and lead them in physical training.

Although the Navy fell short of its recruitment goals in 2023, the branch shows no signs of dialing down the intensity recruits face during basic training. However, RDCs also learn how to implement the Navy's Warrior Toughness program, which provides recruits with tools to cope with the stress they experience during boot camp.

Best tour of my career, hands down. Enjoyed every single second I was there. Things have definitely changed since I went through it but still miss is. I loved the fact that I was given 88 recruits from 88 different walks of life and got the opportunity to mold them into one cohesive unit was extremely satisfying.

Just graduated boot camp and my RDC is in this video Petty Officer 1st Class Alexander. One of the best RDC’s at that command. Amazing motivator and a great leader, nice to see him in this video. Thank you Petty Officer HOOYA!

Army Veteran here (2000-2007). In nine weeks, I went from only 24 push-ups in two minutes to 81. I hope they still push recruits to better themselves and aren't just putting on a show and passing them through just because they need the numbers.

It’s been almost 2 years since graduation and seeing PO Simpson made me smile. If she sees this I hope she knows how much she motivated me during bootcamp. Losing 40lbs was very hard but so worth it. Also Roraff and I are still friends!! (This is Monahan)

It’s cool to see what they go through before they become the instructors all of the recruits come to know & love.

When the HIIT workouts are hitting 👏 They have to know how it feels to be trained into order to lead their trainees to success. Great job!

i think the navy is definitely taking the right approach with this. we cant lower the standards because war doesnt lower the standards but allowing people a short time to collect themselves (as they would find ways to do in war) still helps the recruits positively

I see AO1 Covington and HM2 Beal. I won't forget the beating they gave me in Boot Camp for having a "good day". Congrats to them for becoming C school instructors and being problem solvers.

why is it that if I point out standards can't even match your local gym or cross fit place then I'm the hater or vet for higher standards and excellence should be what America is about

I can never join any military branch. I have too much anxiety and would probably have a panic attack doing any of these trainings. I salute those who can and choose to do it. Thank you for your service. Thank you for protecting folks like me and my family. You are the reasons I can live in peace.

"The Marine Corps is the only branch that met its recruiting mission... and the Space Force." Lol.
