As a skydiver, I can say that you always have a reserve parachute. It also has an automatic opening mechanism. I personally saw a case where a guy lost consciousness and landed without injuries. There are almost no deaths due to an unopened parachute; people most often die due to mid-air collisions with another parachutist or complete disregard for safety precautions.

There's been a case in Soviet Russia when woman fall from a plane without parachute and survived by dropping on the anthill. Her heart almost stopped, but hundreds of ants biting her caused a burst of adrenaline and she survived. She lost all of her teeth and most of her bones were broken but she was later saved and recovered.
