3 soldiers died in training on the Brecon Beacons doing stage 1 in 2013. Also the raid on the Iranian embassy is probably the most impressive thing any special forces has accomplished. It will be interesting to see the full extent of SAS involvement. There has to be a reason they are the most respected and feared special forces in the world

I served 23 years in the Royal Signals, British Army Communications. I remember a good friend of mine who also served tried for 264 Signal Sqn SAS selection (now 18 Signal Regt). He was the fittest guy I had ever served with, a steam train whilst tabbing. He was rejected twice, first time for an injury and second time for 1 navigational error. He said that there is a good reason the SAS are the best. The other countries they make very little mistakes and it's accepted. Enough said.

The "Hills" he refers to are the Brecon Beacons and Elan Valley in south Wales. Aptitude Phase (hill phase) is 4 weeks long. Anyone who's walked the four peaks of the Horseshoe trial of the Brecon Beacons for fun on a Sunday afternoon will no how hard it is. The steep inclines. The insane burning in the legs and lungs that just goes on for hours. Image running over the entire range end to end and back again against the clock in full gear, carrying a 40Ib Bergen and a rifle. Going further and carrying a bit more weigh in the backpack each day, all week, every week until the Long Drag. A final endurance march of 64 km which must be completed within 20 hours. There's not many left after that. Then you've got to do it all again in the jungle of Belize! For 9 weeks!! That's not even half way. Employment training (14 weeks) then Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract (4 weeks). This is why there are only 60 operatives in a Sabre Squadron. They don't make men like this in numbers of 2000!

So this video about the SAS turns into another American bragging about how great the US military is.

Fun fact: washing out of SAS selection carries no stigma simply because to be chosen for the selection process marks you as a cut above your peers in the first place.

I have a friend who did some training with several special forces groups, he said the main thing he noticed about special forces was that the instructors would give an insane task that would make normal soldiers laugh and say "no way that can be done" and the Special forces folks would not even flinch and just proceed.
TLDR: The can-do attitude is the biggest difference between a special forces person and a regular person.

Navy Seals and SAS were both on a training exercise some years ago. On the Navy Seals base they put a make shift flag up and wrote on it "2nd to None". SAS responded by putting a makeshift flag up themselves and on it they wrote "None"
