Back in 1981, I think it was when I was on a "Salad flight" to Minneapolis on Republic Airlines and I bit into a cherry tomato and the contents sprayed out on the poor guy in front of me. I was absolutely horrified. I can't believe the guy didn't feel it, but it went unnoticed by him -- but not by the passengers that sat around and behind me and not by my parents. Horror, followed by silent tittering laughter. By the time we had exited the plane, and we were in the walkway, we saw that it had dried in his Aquanet coiffed hair and was spattered on the back of his suit. Probably on his way to some important meeting. Hey, I was just a kid!

I believe this scene was really meant to be disgusting and agonizing. Denethor is eating almost like an animal, even though he is the ruler of the greatest kingdom of Men. Maybe they wanted to portray what Tolkien said about Denethor was a political leader, while soldiers are dying, including his own son, he is simply eating his luncheon.

Many soldiers in the First World War must have imagined this scenario.
