System Shock is a legendary immersive sim and the remake work carried out by the iconic Nightdive Studios is simply exceptional. We've already reviewed the game in-depth last year based on its initial PC release but it's now finally available on last-gen and current-gen consoles. John Linneman focuses on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions of the game in this video, tackling the quality of the ports and whether the controller-based interface works well.

I appreciated John's comments about animation motion blur vs full screen movement motion blur. Developers should take note and differentiate between the two in their options.

I'm with you on the per-object motion blur, John. We're always trying to make games look "more cinematic", so selective blur on objects seems like a good thing to have.

How you're able to drop videos of this quality with comparisons from the OG XB1 to the PS5 still blows my mind. I'd love to watch you edit one of these

The per-pixel motion blur looks so good, this really needs to be the standard every game makes motion blur to.

People who say that it's not worth upgrading to current-gen consoles because of (supposedly) lack of optimized games don't realize that even in old games the loading times improved a lot. That goes without saying that cold-boot time is below ten seconds.
P.S.: I forgot to mention that with the last-gen console, there was stuttering in populated/heavy action areas but not anymore with my current-gen console.

This remake is so awesome I wish Nightdive were delivering such a robust remake for its sequel, despite it being less needed.

This was legitimately my favourite game of 2023.

One of my favourite games of last year. Highly recommended.

Developers really need to make separate camera motion blur and object motion blur options.
Is what I'd really like to say, however it seems like Unreal engine itself sadly doesn't make this easy, apparently.

Big issues with controller support for me are not being able to quickly activate hardware. You have to slowly move the inventory cursor, whose speed you can't change, over to the hardware you want and manually activate/deactivate it. Y axis movement feels faster than x axis and you can't change this either. Having a hotbar at all when using a controller instead of a weapon/item/hardware wheel. Deus Ex 3 switched between the 2 automatically. Nightdive's own Quake remasters and I think Turok as well added weapon wheels so it's absence here is odd.

I tried 3 mice all different ones with USB adapters on the ps5 and none worked. So keyboard and mice don't seem to work which, I kinda bought the game because the video says they did. I hope this gets fixed

PC players are getting so many of the good console games sent their way recently, it’s only fair we get a few classics like this sent back over 🥰

Last gen games being capped at 30 fps because of the CPU makes sense. The PS4 Pro being capped at the same resolution and frame rate as the base PS4 makes no sense. I'm not expecting 4k like with the One X but that should be at least 1440p.

Love this remake though hardware activation using a gamepad is still a problem.
Nightdive: MAKE A WEAPON WHEEL FOR WEAPON SELECTION AND HARDWARE ACTIVATION.

Now everybody buy it so we can get a remake of System Shock 2 :)

A game that expects you to pay attention is greatly appreciated! Too many games nowadays can be played on autopilot. Seems like a great port to consoles as well. :)

I absolutely love how beautiful the game looks, these guys really know how to do colors. Considering how great this turned out, I want them to do System Shock 2, which was the best First Person game ever made for me. Also very cool that they implemented keyboard and mouse on PS5.

It's fantastic but the controller was horrible on PC (the inventory mostly), to the point where I had to stop playing. I just tried it and you can finally use the dpad to select things in the inventory with the latest update! I can't wait to play through it now!

There is no mouse input on PS5. Keyboard works apparently.

I wish motion blur was more granular. It would be nice if you could turn off camera movement-based motion blur but keep on the motion blur on object movement.
