Back in high school, Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) had everything going for him. A basketball phenom, he could have punched his ticket to college or even the pros, but, instead, he chose to walk away from the game, forfeiting his future.

Jack’s glory days are long gone…but, as it turns out, not forgotten. Years later, he gets the chance to take back his life when he is asked to coach the struggling basketball team at his alma mater. Jack reluctantly accepts, surprising no one more than himself, and as the boys start to come together as a team and win, Jack may get his last shot at redemption.

Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (“Argo,” “The Accountant”) stars in “The Way Back,” directed by Gavin O’Connor (“The Accountant,” “Warrior”).

There's no better feeling for an alcoholic when you know the fridge is stocked and no one is around to judge you. There's no worse feeling for an alcoholic when you later realize it's all gone, and no one is around to love you.

This scene hits home in so many ways.

When you think you have it all figured out when you're sober for a few days, feeling positive, energetic and amazing about life in general, you start losing faith and realizing you "need" your fix, start drinking heavily again and then those positive thoughts you had go out the window.

Alcoholism is a terrible thing.

I still remember the 1st time I watched this movie. When it got to this scene, I literally had to walk out and I started crying. It was like looking at myself in the mirror and I wasn't ready for it. But it made me realize I have to do better. I have to.

This scene is what its truly like for an alcoholic spending a night alone. Drinking and wanting to reach out to someone but afraid to at the same tome.

As a former alcoholic, it brought me to tears to see the accuracy of this scene. So often Hollywood portrays alcoholism as going out and getting wasted with your friends but that's not the case for a lot of people. Instead you're in your shitty apartment, hating yourself because your life is in shambles, and you're getting wasted drinking cheap beer.
*Alone.*

The one beer in the freezer trick ….I think we’ve all been here

This is probably the most accurate depiction of alcoholism I've ever seen in a movie.

The way he "practices" the conversation over the phone, says one wrong thing, and immediately gives up and tries again and again.

The feeling that drinking more and more will make him come off as more likable while also just caring less about the way he's perceived the more he drinks...

How after 2 or 3 beers he sounds more confident and happy with the "Father! Hey listen I've given it a lot of thought..." yet he still isn't happy with how he comes off and also just wants to drink more and practice more.

How after more and more alcohol he is now just a slurring mess.... he's confident in what he's saying, sure... but it sounds like a trainwreck.

"I don't wanna coach your fuckin' basketball team".... how he would never think of saying something so rude to someone but the alcohol is enabling him.

How he knows deep down this binge drinking session won't actually affect anything because he's too scared to actually make the phone call so who cares if he has "one more drink".

The way he chugs his drink and then immediately hits his cigarette which gives more of a dopamine hit

The way he goes back to the initial "Father... I've been giving it a lot of thought" but now he just sounds like a slurring mess ready to pass out.

And finally the morning shower... very hungover... knowing that you're just gonna do what you did last night.... tonight.

In under 3 minutes Affleck portrayed the struggle with alcoholism better than any other movie I've ever seen. It's clear that he understands the struggle and its crazy because he's mr. Hollywood superstar. He's not a loner loser sitting in his shitty apartment like this character is. But it doesn't matter where we come from.. our suffering is our suffering. Pain is pain.

Incredible film and performance.. depicts alcoholism in a way that most other Hollywood films don't these days! For anyone out there struggling, there's light at the end of the tunnel and you ARE worthy of love and support!

It’s heartbreaking, anyone who knows the experience of being an Alcoholic knows exactly what his character is going through.

The fact that Ben Affleck didn't get an Oscar nomination for this is criminal!

My father was an alcoholic and I could never imagine that pain of "just one more drink".

This film and Flight just haunt me with the pain he must have been feeling every Friday with his pals.

We drink to hide our pain, trauma and overall self hate. No matter how big or bad the problem is each and every person can overcome

Nearly fell off my chair when I saw this scene the first time as this was my reality every day for years in an unhappy marriage where I felt alone with someone in the next room. 3 years sober today.

This was the last movie I saw at the theater before the pandemic because I remember seeing this opening weekend and the rest of the week the theater was closed. This scene stuck with me and I was trying not to cry when I first watched this because I was thinking of an uncle struggled with alcoholism. A few but only a couple recovered. So it made me miss him, and when he's grabbing that last beer out the freezer it just felt so real, I'm surprised he wasn't nominated best actor that year.

I’m thankful that my life never quite reached the depths and extent of drinking that Affleck’s character experienced. I worked a blue collar job as well and would usually drink a 12 pack or so every work night. Anywhere between 18-24 beers on a Friday and then the same on Saturday night.. Repeated that on Sundays too if my upcoming week was weighing on me badly enough... my depression and anxiety got increasingly worse, I was constantly shaky and irritable. Many nights I would wake up next to vomit, piss in random parts of my house and started wetting the bed again (something I did every night as a kid for 13 years straight). Watching this movie was a big turn around moment for me. Thankfully I was able to reduce my alcohol intake immensely and I now have it very much under control, but watching this movie was like holding a mirror up to what my life was quickly becoming. Tough times, Inner demons and unresolved issues are an alcoholics worst enemy. I just hope that everyone who’s going through alcoholism can overcome it and regain control.

I think we all have our unhealthy escapes. This gives me chills because I know the feeling that once that moment of a quick fix goes away, you realize you are alone.

The mannerisms, having a cold one in the freezer, tapping on the can. Having a lot of alcohol at your disposal. As a former addict it was all about comfort for me
