Back in high school, Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) had everything going for him. A basketball phenom, he could have punched his ticket to college or even the pros, but, instead, he chose to walk away from the game, forfeiting his future.

Jack’s glory days are long gone…but, as it turns out, not forgotten. Years later, he gets the chance to take back his life when he is asked to coach the struggling basketball team at his alma mater. Jack reluctantly accepts, surprising no one more than himself, and as the boys start to come together as a team and win, Jack may get his last shot at redemption.

Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (“Argo,” “The Accountant”) stars in “The Way Back,” directed by Gavin O’Connor (“The Accountant,” “Warrior”).

That look and sigh before taking that first sip is so relatable and real to those like me who suffer alcoholism. You know deep down the drinks won’t make anything better but as long as it makes you numb to the problems at that moment

The guy that carried him up is a sweet soul. He knew that kid had a problem and still helped him. He coulda kicked him to the curb and told him to suffer alone. We need help when we're there.

This is the only movie I can think of that made me cry multiple times. When I first watched it, I literally had to leave to compose myself because watching him drink was like looking at myself in the mirror. But it made me realize I have to do better. I have to.

I like how when he walks in the bartender doesn't ask him drink he wants, just already knows and he doesn't even look at the bartender, just looks off in the distance, waiting for his drink to be brought to him. He has that look where he almost hopes he doesn't bring the drink.

Man the music adds so much to this scene

Especially around 3:01, fast pace to slow pace once he has a drink

Gets me every time 😢

I can so relate to this....When my uncle, who i was close with, lied in the hospital dying, at one point I couldn't take it anymore, I went across the street to a restaurant and started drinking until i puked up, underneath my chair. Next week I am 9 years sober!!!

As an alcoholic, when something goes bad or you’re faced with something that is horrendous you just get those whispers in your brain, I’m only 30 but relied on alcohol since I was 21 so instead of benders I can sort of just do a night and get blitzed and lay around the next day feeling like utter shit and not stagger walk to the shop and get more, it’s a very difficult thing to do because when booze is your comfort blanket you’re fixated on it being the only thing that can give you relief. You literally have to stop yourself from drinking and as much as you’re depressed and anxious during those times you have to just push through the hard days and deal with the misery otherwise you’ll end up in a coffin, still struggling with that myself

My god, the music in this scene, Rob Simonsen's poweful score, in tandem with the way the scene plays out, is so maddenignly depressingly powerfully sad.

Dam I got so much respect for Ben Alfeck after this movie especially after this scene. Being a father, I can’t imagine losing my son to cancer.

My issue is my “hangovers” the next day, I don’t really get them like I use to, now it’s just server anxiety and body jerks from my withdrawals. I got about 2 days without any and then I’m back to it again but working hard tho
