If you are going the expensive, emergency food bucket route, make sure you also have enough clean water to prepare that food and a grid-down way to boil that water. I recommend a one-burner butane stove for safe cooking indoors when the weather is too unpleasant outside to use that gas grill or propane camp stove.

And do check the contents of those emergency food buckets. You may need a plastic lid lifter tool to open those food buckets multiple times. Usually the dry instant food is packaged in multiple serving size Mylar bags. If you are making meals for just one or two people, you will want to drop each opened Mylar bag inside a galloon size Zip Lock bag to keep the unused servings from spilling out. You will also need a way of measuring each uncooked serving of food so that you exercise portion control to get the maximum number of days of food claimed on the bucket. A food scale helps you measure out the dry weight of the number of servings you need to make, based on the weight of each type of food listed on the label.

And do look at the nutritional information on the back of the bucket and calculate the total number of calories in the entire bucket. Divide this calorie total number by 2000 (based on feeding an adult 2000 calories per day). The resulting number is the actual number of days that the food in the bucket will feed one sedentary middle-aged adult. So, if that number is lower than the number of days claimed on the food bucket label, you will need to supplement those meals with enough extra calories to give an adult 2000 calories daily. White rice, plain dry pasta and dried lentils from the supermarket can easily store for a year in a cool, dry, vermin-free pantry, cook easily in simmering water, are inexpensive and can provide enough additional calories to supplement those food bucket instant meals.

Ok, girly girl, 😋 i live in south Florida, for over 40 years, and your 100% correct, we all must prepare for natural disaster's, and i strongly believe that its going to get worst, natural, and man made problems are going to get alot worse. So get ready, and stay safe.

Expecting others to take care of you is selfish. As the airlines safety says, place you own mask on so you can help others. Being prepared is as much or more a mentality issue as it is supplies. In regard to supplied, purchase a little at a time and prioritize. The concept is easy... The problem is people either over do it or don't do it at all. Life is a balance, the mantra is self reliant so you can be a good neighbor and not a burden on others. Just an opinion.
