Theory going around Odin actually collected all the infinity stones when Hela was alive pre underworld. After collecting all the stones finally realizing after his conquest of the nine realms. Odin was sickened from he had done and banished Hela to start over again. But when Thor was born and started to act like his big sister he banished him to earth instead of the underworld. To try and humble Thor. This was a sign to Thanos that Odin is getting to old.

Good point... it's even been implied that Odin was the original wielder of the Infinity stones. He's also the one who hid them because he feared the power they had.
Asgardians get stronger with age... that's why he could imprison Hela and use the Infinity stones without harm to himself.
I don't think he died of natural causes, I think he decided not to live anymore (he felt his time was up).

There is NO way Thanos was waiting for Odin to die. How would he even know that Odin was gonna die. Thanos knew Asgard was in chaos and weakened after Loki debacle. He just took advantage of that when Odin died and Hela perpetuated ragnarok. Basically was just good luck for Thanos.
